Glamping - What do you think about this new trend?

Read the article and weigh in on what you think about the whole Glamping concept. Also, what about this - would you want to work at one of these 'luxury camping resorts?' Why or why not?

3 words. Glamping is lame...its a disgrace to even have it associated with camping. Real camping is sun, dirt, bugs, rain, and sweat and I love it!

$600 to camp with a butler? The Hell? First of all I wouldn't even pay that much to stay in an exclusive suite in a five star hotel but aside from that - that is just NOT camping.

I think those parents mentioned in the article would have done better by their child to NOT spoil him and also to send him to a REAL summer camp. Maybe he would have learned a few things about the real world instead of continuing to be a pampered child.

I agree with the comment by JD Greer as well - real camping is being out in the elements. That's part of the experience!

Well, it doesn't really fit my definition of camping. However, one way to look at it is this; those folks with tons of extra cash aren't going to rough it so to speak. But, they are people who can afford to donate money to environmental issues. They do vote. So, for them to get "outside" and experience natures beauty, albeit, with a butler is still a good thing. Awareness is important. Might not be a totally bad trend. Just a thought...

At least in case of grizzly attack you could toss the butler to the bear...

Guess I missed this last year... Glamping...hmm...I don't 'get' it, but that just goes in a long list of things like designer jeans, $200 sunglasses, fat Frenchmen in Speedos... But there are a lot of people that do that also cannot understand anything I like.

Would I want to work at one? Well, I wouldn't automatically dismiss the idea. The Resort at Paws Up (in the article), probably not. It looks fine. That is my way of saying that I couldn't give you an exact list of pros and cons, but it doesn't 'call' out to me...empty gut feeling. That's kind of important to me because I started a little later (40s) in this seasonal thing. In the summer there's a lot of places to choose from, and if I stick with ones that I do get that feeling, I'll be working into my 80s. It seems like every summer I get to knock one off...but I end up adding two or three more.

I just went and checked out the employment section of the Paws Up website, and their housing situation doesn't seem optimal (limited company, but they'll give you contacts in Missoula), that's the first thing I check on after I get that gut feeling. I don't really care if it's 'rustic' or tent city, but I'm not thrilled about needing to deal with finding my own place and furnishing it for just a few months. That hassle would probably mean that I'm just going somewhere else on my list.

But, if you do get some other listings, I'll probably glance them over.

It isn't teaching the rich children (spoiled brats) anything about nature or self-sufficiency because they are protected from bugs, sweat, weather, etc... where I work at now the children of the owner work in housekeeping and as bussers because their mom believes it teaches character and important lessons in life. You don't learn these lessons while being spoiled/pampered... they are lucky to have a mom such as she. I personally prefer to work in places with "real" people...

It'd be pretty cool to have a butlerette mixing my martini for me. I never get them right

I'm going to have to agree with the first two comments. And reading that article was shocking, "We don't cook" "we don't even share the same bathroom" Those people need a reality check :) ...
