I worked for both Xanterra and DNCPR at South Rim and have to honestly say that, although DNC has better housing, they also lack internal structure as far as HR and such.
I had a roommate incident (DNC allows co-ed housing) where I was threatened and had some of my possessions destroyed, and all they did was move ME to another apartment. The person who did this was never punished in any way and in fact was rewarded by being allowed to live alone in a 2BR/2BA unit.

I lived in a "quiet" dorm w/Xanterra and it wasn't so bad. Our bathrooms there were fairly well kept.
But it could be loud til very late despite Quiet Hours rules (not enforced)

Pay with both companies at South Rim starts at minimum wage, which is up to $6.90/hour in Arizona as of the New Year.

Overall, if you don't mind the isolation from Flagstaff and living in "iffy" communal settings, you'll be okay. If you are a frugal/a saver, no doubt you can save money cos there is nothing there to do! lol
The experience really is what you make of it.

No one has mentioned living in an RV or working for the Grand Canyon Association. If you have the ability to purchase a trailer, 5th wheel or motorhome there are very nice RV sites available to Xanterra, Delaware North or Grand Canyon Association employees.

My husband and I worked for the GC Association 2 summers in a row, 2004 & 2005. They were great to work for and the RV space was wonderful. This was Desert View (East end of South Rim). Nice and quiet out there by the Watchtower.

If you are looking for activities, the village would be a better bet. We wanted nature, quiet and didn't need to be entertained. It was perfect! We even harvested pine nuts in our own RV site.
