Living & Working in Great Places

Aloha! The snow's barely started and I've already started looking at summer work (I can't help it if they're already advertising)! If you work on Mackinac Island (or any others in Michigan) what are the car storage fees at the ferry dock? Driving to the next gig is half the fun so I'd rather not fly. Any opinions on the hotels up there - Island House, Rock Harbor? Mahalo!

If you park in the parking lot and not in a garage it is free to park your car for the season. You just have to tell the docks that you work on the island. Alot of jobs have meal plans and lodging you just have to be careful to make sure of the charges. I worked front desk at the Island House and I had a blast. Mackinac Island is beautiful and fun but it is an Island so shopping is limited as far as neccessities go. Also prices on the Island can be very expensive but if you take the ferry across and do your shopping in St. Ignace, Mackinaw City or Cheboygan you tend to save alot of money. Mackinac Island was the most fun I've had in a long time. People work there from all over the world (especially Jamaica) and anyone is sure to fit in. I am going back this summer and cannot wait!

Hey man,

I'm not sure, but I'm asking the same question. I'm considering going up to Mackinac to work the remainder of the season, but I'm concerned that serving/bartending money will drop significantly toward the end of the season. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate any information.

I'm not there yet, but I've spoken with a couple places up there and have gotten the impression that there are jobs to be had all over the place from the second week of August on. I'm probably just going to go up there and take a look around before I commit to anything.

August is probably the busiest month on the Island, but I'd expect there to be a significant drop off in traffic as autumn rolls around. Since I generally bartend that's a concern...
