Living & Working in Great Places

Within the next few months, I am planning to be semi-retired. I would like to find work outdoors, possibly driving shuttle bus or something like that. The questions I have are: Where are some places to look for this type of work? How long has it taken some of you to find the kind of work you seek in campgrounds, resorts, etc?

Hi Sid,

Where do you want to work? There are lots of ski resorts advertising driving jobs right now and some of the summer employers are getting busy by recruiting for drivers who would need to be trained prior to the summer season.

Check out the link to see more options for driving/guiding jobs on Cool Works.

Best,
Kari

My strategy has always been to choose the area you want to be at and then look for what the local community has is the way of jobs. Its probably easier for me as I am a skilled F&B type and am able to live on little (relative to my generational peers) income. But there is always a job. Try to take one that affords you time off enough to live life.

I have been doing summer and some winter work in the National Parks for the past 10 years. I find that when applying for a position I tell them that I am available for the entire season. That usually gets me a job as many people don't want to or can't work for the entire season. I usually start looking for summer work in January. Many jobs are not posted until then. Try applying to be a red bus driver in Glacier National park. The bus drivers work through Glacier Park Inc. Glacier Park Ink hires about 400 to 500 seasonal workers. If you like to hike this is a great park. It is a little out of the way. The closes town in about 50 miles away if you are on the west side and over 100 miles if you are on the east side.

Bus drivers are hired here in the summer as seasonal employees.. You could be driving one of the three 1954 busses, or even one of the step side vans that tour the park. Lively group of youngsters here in the Teon National Park.. You just have to decide where you want to live and go from there...

Good luck...

Hey there! I have found a place that you can post for jobs, check for woofering-like positions, etc. You might want to post a "position wanted" on it. I found my organic farm gig there. www.caretakers.bravehost.com

There is also a great green jobs board called greengreeny.org It is just classifieds for environmentally friendly listings.

Go to www.RetiredBrains.com and click on search jobs and enter school bus driver or shuttle bus driver and enter the location or locations at which you like to work. You can set an "alert" to notify you when the job you are seeking is posted on this site. Also you can Google school bus drivers or bus drivers or shuttle bus driver.

Most of the postings for these kinds of jobs for the summer are not up until March of 2009.
You could also consider being a starter or a ranger on a golf course. The problem with most of these jobs is they don't pay much, but provide free golf so they are great jobs if you are a golfer. Golf courses also seek people to work on the driving ranges picking up balls with their pick-up machines.

There are also thousands of landscaping and grass mowing jobs available but except in some select communities they don't pay a great deal either.

Lastly consider working as a Census Taker. The Census Bureau will be hiring next year for the 2010 census. Call 1-866-861-2010. These are outside jobs but in most cases you will need a car and will be driving from house to house.

I have a friend here in Anchorage who is working as a recruiter for the census... they pay very well if income is a concern. You don't have to to drive all over either because they employ a lot of office workers.
