Living & Working in Great Places

Has anyone worked at Glacier? I understand it's a shorter season than YNP. What are the pros and cons?

Hi BJ.. I was hired for the summer at Glacier and had the same curiosity about it that you do. There is another discussion, though short, maybe helpful in the Older and Bolder forum about Glacier. Check it out. Karen

what were you hired for and at what location? I worked there last summer and loved it.

I was hired as the location accountant. I see Ann held that position last year...(wonder how you liked it Ann??) I am excited to see the trails and enjoy the park. Where are you working this year, Goretexter? Karen

I enjoyed working at East Glacier - that is one of my first jos I had as a seasonal employee. I enjoyed it immensely. The length of employment depends upon what job you choose to do. I was there from the start to the end because I worked as the location accountant.. easy job and I usually picked up about 4 hours extra each week. Yellowstone is just a stone's throw from the Tetons... you might enjoy working for GTLC instead.. they pay more! Good luck and enjoy your season what ever you choose to do!

Don't waste your time and effort with GNP I got a job there last year drove all the way up to find out that the housing was so horrible that I left the next day. The room I had was maybe 12' x 12' which housed two people in bunkbeds and that was the nicer of the dorms I was told. Not to mention the bathrooms were down the hall which I expected but there were only 2 shower heads and 2 toilets to share amoung 12 to 14 people. I checked out the other dorms on property (McDonald lake location) and a dorm is quite a stretch they are merely bunkhouses if that. These so called dorms/bunkhouses house 16 people and are maybe 12' wide and 50 to 60 foot long with bunkbeds lined up in them with the bathroom in the middle. Real nice. ha ha. They say you won't be spending much time in your room but I figure the time I do spend better be quality time like trying to sleep or get away from it all without having to hike a trail everytime. Not to mention these dorms are not critter free and if mosquitos bother you at all expect to get eaten alive. Thats the con the pro is, it is the most awe inpiring National Park you'll ever see. If they had housing like YNP they wouldn't have to advertise for help because they wouldn't be able to get people to leave.

I had a great time in Glacier last summer. Housing is usually the area that is toughest to adjust to, especially if you are a newcomer to the seasonal world. You make sacrifices to live in pristine beauty..that's just the way it is. If you are an adaptable person, you should be fine. If you have special concerns talk to HR or location managers to see if they can accomodate.

I appreciate your response but it has been my experience that people like myself want more specific info. on the pros and cons - such as housing. Therefore I like to give info. that I myself have tried to seek out and failed to get the low down on in looking for seasonal work. The how, what, why of the situation before I get involved in it I don't like surprises. Merely saying that the housing is an area that is the toughest to adjust to is not saying anything about the housing. What did you actually think of the housing? How did the communal bath situation work out it just seemed a little tight there in Glacier? It has been my experience from working in several parks that communal baths turn into a pit real quick and it only takes one slob to screw it all up.
