I've heard a lot of negative things about housing at Xanterra, but is there a quieter dorm available for the older and bolder crew? Also, If you use the RV sites, will you get enough of a paycheck to live on after RV site fees?
I think it depends on what property you are at. At Mt Rushmore in the past they have tried putting older people on the 3rd (Top) floor of housing so they dont have people above them making noise. I am not sure about other dorms.
I think the RV sites are $45 a week which includes electric and water I believe...
From what I understand it will be cheaper to live in an RV while there than in a dorm. We applied for an RV site, but haven't heard anything. Good luck!
Hey, I've worked for Xanterra four summers at Crater lake and i don't think Xanterra is any better or worse than other places I've heard of. At Crater lake NP there are 3 different areas for RV's and 2 different dorms. The Rim Dorm is the "party" dorm with most of the 19-22 year olds. The Mazama "A" dorm is where the managers also live, although mazama "B" dorm is a separate building and can get a bit noisey, too. The campground is 11 miles east of the park and has lots of mosquitoes until August. The best RV area is near the Mazama dorms. There is another RV area
near the Mazama campground for those who can't live without their dogs.
The earlier you arrive the better. By the middle of the season the room choices get down to whatever is left. My first summer in Yellowstone I arrived in June and my choices included living with someone 25 years older then me in the dorm or living with a smoker in a cabin. I picked the cabin and it worked out great. My roommate was done with her agreement in a month and I had a cabin to myself. If you arrive early you can also meet other people and possibly move rooms before all the employees begin arriving in June. They do try to have a quieter dorm at each location.
