Living & Working in Great Places

Erin

Anyone else having a hard time finding something for this summer?

I don't know if it's me, or the fact we've already had 14 seasonal jobs or what, but I'm just not feeling excited by our options so far for this summer. We were thinking maybe whitewater rafting, or maybe a resort somewhere in Vermont or Massachusetts, maybe somewhere in Colorado, or Michigan, or Minnesota, or even something in our favorite state of Alaska, but nothing sounds terribly exciting... The interviews we've had haven't sparked the butterflies in my belly like they usually do. We've had a couple flaky ones, and we've had a couple places sound excited about us and then flake out. Anyone else feeling this blah about the summer opportunities? Hopefully something good comes up soon!

This summer will be my first seasonal job, so I don't know how things usually work. I didn't have a problem finding a job. I had 3 offers in Alaska, and I ended up picking a job in Ketchikan. I signed my commitment papers and faxed them back, but I haven't really heard from them past the "congratulations your hired" e-mail. Trying to figure out room and board with the housing personal up there, but that seems to have fizzled out. Housing never replied to my last e-mail which was over a week ago. Is that normal? I'd imagine that they'd talk to me at least every 5-6 days, and answer questions a little more promptly. So I'm with you on the sounds exciting and then flake out part. I'm still committed to working with that company, but are they still committed to hiring me is what I'd like to know.
I would suggest working at the same place as me this summer because it sounded like a great job, but I don't know what happened to the communication, and I'm getting a bit worried. What do you think?

Hey Timothy,

From being on the employer side for so long, I know that their intentions are good, but sometimes they are not the best communicators once they hire staff. Trust me, I wish it were better. (I've written blog posts about it directed at employers.) I think what happens is that they get too busy and are really thankful to hire you, but look at it as a check off the list sort of thing and move on to the next hire. It's meant as no offense to you, but I know that it happens.

Hang in there, I'm sure you still have the job and all is well. By all means, feel free to touch base with them. I'm sure that they'll appreciate that you're still interested and committed to them.

Cheers,
Kari

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Do they provide housing, or were you looking to them to help you find it locally? What Kari said is probably true, they have a lot of different people to hire, so they're probably pretty busy. Do you have an email address for them? We always email the people that have hired us with a million questions, and they usually respond within a few days. Don't forget too, that a lot of the people in Alaska are taking vacations right now since the summer will be really busy. Where is it Ketchikan, if you don't mind my asking?

I'm going to be working at Alaska Canopy Adventures as a tour guide. You can check out their site at: http://www.alaskacanopy.com/ They must have just updated their website because it doesn't look nearly as ghetto as it did a few days ago. They have two locations Juneau and Ketchikan. I'm working at their southern most location which is in Ketchikan. If you end up getting a job there, and you want to carpool or caravan let me know.

Sounds like an awesome place. We worked in Juneau, but were only in Ketchikan for a day. Let us know when you hear from them!

Hi Erin. Have you tried www.backdoorjobs.com, www.jobmonkey.com or (I just discovered) www.jobsinparadise.com? They are not as good as coolworks but I noticed a couple of jobs not listed on coolworks.

I haven't. I'll check em out. Thanks! (Sorry Coolworks. You know we love you! :) )

I liked backdoorjobs.com and applied to a couple places on there. One of them told me they'd let me know within a couple weeks... then emailed me 15 minutes later and said there was nothing for us there, but they forwarded our resumes to other places. Hm... We shall see, I guess! :)
