Living & Working in Great Places

I've been hired for summer season at Jackson Lake Lodge in Grand Teton NP.
If any of you have worked here, please drop a line with anything I need to know regarding dorm life, employee rec program, etc.

I worked for Xanterra at GCSR for the past 11 months and am so ready for a change.

hi charles my start date is May 11
I am trying to arrange a rideshare otherwise I'll fly into Salt Lake City and take the Jackson Express bus (believe it or not it's waayyyy cheaper than flying to Jackson!)
Hey Tammy, I worked at JLL last season and I worked in the Teton shop ( one of the four shops there). It was a lot of fun. Matt and Wyatt are crazy and are easy to talk to if you have any problems. Patti Greene Runs the Shops and she can be well.....interesting. Just make sure you are on her good side and everything will be cool.

I didn't drive either and the shuttle will take you into town. Last year they went three times a day. I think it was like 8am, 1pm, and 7pm. The only thing is that you only have an hour in town unless you spend all day/afternoon the catch the next one. If you have a car head up to Teton Village and check out all the high end hotels like the Four Seasons and Snake River lodge. You can ride the Gondola for free with your employee ID.

The only real annoying thing was that the internet was soooooooooo slow. If you don't mind waiting then its fine. I think the best park was that you could walk to the lodge and not have to worry about driving.

Hope you have a great time!

Sarah
hey hows it goin?i worked for gtlc last summer at jenny lake lodge, there are some good things and of course some bad, dorm life is cool there are alot of things to do in jackson, fair warning the biggest social activity is drinking, and more drinking, management is very relaxed until a problem arises, park service does surprise searches in the dorms with drug dogs, but as far as enjoying the tetons gtlc provides employees with all the services the park has to offer for little or no money, warning WATCH OUT FOR ANIMALS ON THE ROADS AND DONT BREAK THE SPEED LIMIT,and good luck
thanks for your replies Sarah and will...

can anyone tell me if the shuttle to Jackson is free, or else how much it costs?

IMO the biggest social activity at all these joints seems to be drinking... I don't mind a few drinks but I don't enjoy getting drunk or being around drunks, so I tend to keep to myself or find friends for hiking ...it worked for me at the canyon

park service SHOULD do searches for illegal drugs in the dorms, it seems to me too much stuff goes unpunished (at least it did where I worked last)

I don't drive, so no issues with speed limits! lol

just about 7 weeks left before start date YAY!
yes the shuttle is free, however its not reliable,i am sure you will meet people that don't party, and someone is always going into town,in fact i still have some friends there, you might want to meet the head wrangler at Jenny lake lodge she is awesome,i'm sure you will meet the right people, just tell them you know me,will, for me i am headed to denali for the summer, yipee have fun, good luck!!
The Shuttles are free for the employees but there are probably enough employees with cars that you will make friends with, that you won't have to ride the shuttle. I usually go every week into town so I can see and hear normal folks and of course, go to the County Library.. yep, you too can have a free card to the county library. Loads of books to borrow, even if there is a library in the Whistle Pig.

Unfortunately, drinking does seem to be a problem as folks tend to forget why they came in the first place. A kid was killed last year along with several other being hurt because they went off property and he drove drunk.

There is enough to do here all summer long that doesn't involve drinking, that will keep you busy when you aren't working and you will wonder when you will have time to see the rest.

As to the drug dogs, they are present and are used quite frequently. We also had some kids deported for stealing.

Look me up...I'm friendly and I don't bark too loudly...
Yes the shuttle is free, but like every place they always serve the guest first. Sometimes they would have the employees all sit in the back of the bus on the floor. I'm sure you will find someone who drives. Last year Penny ran the Gift shop and she was really awesome. She was from the mid-west and my friend Erin and I would always give her a hard time about her accent. In a way I think she liked it because we were like her kids. I remember her husband Steve always got a kick out of it.

You could also try and become friends with Darline, she is the manager in the apparel shop. I know she drives as well and she is also very nice. Both her and Penny work there with their husbands.

If you don't drink there is still plenty to do. There is so much hiking and camping stuff. You can also go on the guest activity's like horseback riding, and take a float trip down the snake river. All free to you if there is room. Guest pay upwards of $60 for the float trip.

If I could make more I would go back but well you know. I'm going up to Glacier Bay National Park this may and I am really excited. I'm sure you'll love Jackson it is just amazing!
Hey guys, thanks again for the fast and great answers! I am convinced I am going to have a great summer! Oh, I'm sure I'll have a few drinks, too!!! Just not as much as I know a lot of people do. At GCSR I saw a lot of ppl going to work drunk and getting into fights, etc. Stupid juvenile stuff. I got over all that years ago.

Thanks for the pointers who to seek out for rides and shared outdoor activities, Sarah and Will!
