Living & Working in Great Places

Hey, I decided that xanterra's Grand Canyon 'adventure' wasn't for me, so I applied and was accepted to both SML and ZMR. I was wondering if anyone has worked for either of them and how they liked it. Thanks!

Don't know anything about ZMR but I work at SML summers and you won't find any happier friendly people around...we have been working in National Parks and campgrounds(camphosting) for ten years now. This is my favorite place to work, if you want to call it work with the mountains, water and wildlife a part of your everyday rountine.
What position are you applying for?

I been hearing alot of good things about signal mountain, you got great location there just south of yellowstone, right at the tetons and just north of jackson I think that would be my choice I was hoping to work there myself but I took the job at dornans just down the road from you and it seems really great too . go SML you wont regret it

I don't know Zion Either, but Signal has one of the best reputations of any seasonal place I have ever heard of. The Blackberry Margs are the best I have ever had and their wings also. It is right on the lake 5 miles from Jackson Lake Lodge where I worked for two years. I don't think you can go wrong @ Signal... I may yet apply myself one day. I definitely recommend Signal...

I have worked at ZMR but not at Signal Mountain. However, I have heard a lot of good things about Signal Mountain and would say, from what I've heard, that they would be a better place to work.

how was your experience at zmr?

When I worked there, the housing I lived in was 30 miles away. They may have changed that. What area would you be working in? Most of the people were ok to work with. Feel free to email me if you like.

This is an old discussion, but I will share my experience anyway for the curious...

I worked for SML (Signal Mountain Lodge) last summer, it was very short term employment, because I had a family emergency back home that I had to take care of. But I absolutely loved it there for the time I was there! Everyone was so friendly and scolded me for talking on my cell phone to friends and family back home all the time! lol. It was great, such a different change from Seattle where everyone clutches their cell phone as if it's their life source.
I remember, literally about 5 seconds after I got there (2 hours off the plane in Utah and a long ass bus ride there) I was invited to a housekeepers (I was employed as a housekeeper there) dorm party in what we referred to as "TEXAS", the dorm downstairs, b/c every guy who lived in that dorm was from texas, they even put up a huge texas state flag in their window to display to the world. lol.
The minute I arrived at the party that night (night before staff training and cabin cleanup) I was almost overwhelmed, there were about 20-30 people with huge smiles on their faces, so welcoming and suddenly I found I had a full can of PBR (the drink of choice there due to high alcohol price tag in Wyoming) in my hand. Night progressed with a guy getting drunk and rolling around in the three feet of snow that was still outside the dorms in mid April.
And then later in the week, me and some other staff tried our hands at downhill sledding into the (still completely frozen over) lake when it was about 65 degrees outside and the sun was shining brightly overhead, regardless of the fact that there was still snow EVERYWHERE!
Yeah, there was lots of drama too, but the good outweighed the bad, overall.

I would highly recommend it, Kelsey in charge of HR is super nice too and will answer any questions you have. I also loved the fact that the employee dorms were kinda set back away from the lodge, so the staff had some privacy from the tourists.

Hi,
I have worked in resorts for years. The scuttlebutt on Signal Mountain is the best I have ever heard. They advertise that they have an industry-leading 50% return rate among employees - something matched only by Deer Valley to my knowledge. As an employee in Grand Teton National Park where Signal Mountain is located, I had to stop by and check it out. I was quite impressed with everything. The money didn't appear to be too good but I assume maybe the dinner servers do pretty well. Wall Street is where the money is and Signal Mountain is where the quality of life is. I have heard a little about Zion and while not bad, it hasn't compared to that on Signal Mountain, a place that I tentatively rate as the best in the resort field.
