Living & Working in Great Places

Wondering what people are experiencing in their summer jobs as far as turnout? Are you making money this season?

Are tourist businesses suffering b/c of the state of our economy?

Well, my summer job really just got started...but it is busy. I'm a cook--so I don't depend on tips. But I am making money. I have been scheduled for at least 10 hours overtime for the next month at least from forecast banquet/room counts.

Unless you're some mid-manager trying to climb that corporate ladder, people usually don't screw with their vacation time. All those people out there that really don't like their jobs and live for their vacation time.

In the early 80's money was really tight. We found that Folks would put off buying that new TV, Washer, Auto, etc. but they would not put off their Vacation.
My Wife is in the Hospital-Corporate World and all the employees she work with do nothing but talk about their Vacations.
We go to Mexico a couple of times a year and finding flights was tough last month, and we were booking for December.

I've been in Montana for sometime now and while our last winter was nice and the summer season has yet to start I can say that there was such a discussion with my employer about this very issue.

Problem with our life style is that we make money off people taking vactions, most of the places we work are far, far away from where most people live. With this in mind we find that they obviously need to spend money to just get to us to enjoy thier vactions. This means gas in one form or another, wich is expensive and due to that reason not only are they paying more for gas but also on other items such as food and lodging.

In all honesty and to keep this short without getting into any further, we will be the first to feel the economy. Lots of smaller places will be hit first sadly then the larger area's like ski resorts will be hurt.

Hi, I am helen,

In summer vacation, people are liked to go to some of the tourist place and enjoyed their vacation. So in that time only the tourist vacation are suffered a lot due to over crowdness....

I have found at both Zion and Death Valley Park (where I am working in the General Store) that this will be one of the busiest seasons ever! Since the US dollar has devalued, we are getting 90% Europeans. We are seeing buses averaging 300 to 400 Europeans per day coming through here. I do know that since the summer season is usually the "slow" season for DV, they added a 15% gratuity to ALL the restaurant and bar tabs. The pay is better here at DV than most of the other parks, plus they will hire full time hourly...just to get people to stay for the summer. Did I mention that it has already hit 120 degrees out here?

As a matter of fact, they usually close the gift shop at Stovepipe Wells, but have decided to keep it open this year part-time because of the increased business from the Europeans.

Looks like a good summer.......

Here at the Nantahala Outdoor Center in NC we are down about 15% from last summer.... it is so sloooowww! Gas prices are killing us (guests & employees). I actually got busy this weekend b/c of the holiday but will it last, who knows???

Here at Mt. Rushmore they had a record number turnout for their fireworks display on the 3rd. They made more than their set goals in revenue for both the 3rd and 4th. Now whether the season as a whole will hold up that is yet to be seen. People will give up a lot of things but their vacations is not one of those things.

As a couple people stated, alot of people won't give up their vacation due to a tough economy and neither would I. I'm here at the grand canyon and can't tell the economy is tough.
Europeans are coming by the bus loads everyday. Along w/that, more international workers are here as well due to the increase of tourism.
Now is a good time to hit Las Vegas cause Hotel rates are lower this year than Last.

I am in Alaska for my 2nd season and, if anything, business is UP! We are having a record year . . . and the $5 gas doesn't seem to be affecting anyone!?! Making money and having fun - that's what it's all about right??!! :-)

I was just searching to find out when the Fairmont property at the Tamarack Resort was set to open. I wasn't planning on going back to work, but I thought I might swing by for a visit. What I found was Agassi and Graf decided to pull out of the project with the downturn of upscale properties sales, which means Tamarack is trying to avoid bankruptcy and since it was by far the largest employer in that area of Idaho, the unemployment rate is twice that of the rest of the state.
