Living & Working in Great Places

Hi all. My fiance (soon to be husband in 11 days!) and I have been doing the seasonal thing together for 5 1/2 years now. We've never taken unemployment before, but this time we'll have 2 months in between our last paycheck in Massachusetts and our first paychecks in Montana, and I don't think we're going to be able to pay our bills. He's technically a Colorado resident, and I'm technically an Alaska resident. Does anyone know where we would file unemployment - or if we can, etc? Thanks!

I hope you can, but doubt it. I think one has to be in the state as a full-time resident for most places. I hope I'm wrong.... There are many temp firms that can help, however. Some are day-labor, but pay each day (good for emergency cash). Some are of good quality and actually pay decently. You also might check out catering companies because 'tis the season. You can make o.k. $$$$ and get well-fed.
What part on Montana will you be in? Billings has a Labor Ready (terrible place to work, but you get paid the day you work). Whitefish and Bozeman will have temp places... and catering companies.
Good luck, amiga.... and congrats (on your wedding)!

Thanks! Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. Temping is a good idea. I hadn't thought of that. The main problem is that we're leaving here next Saturday, going to Vermont for the wedding, going to Ohio for a week to pack/unpack, going on our honeymoon, coming back to Ohio to volunteer for Obama, then going to Montana (Big Sky) - not really in any one place very long. Once we get there, he'll start work a couple days later, but I'll still have 2 weeks to wait until my job starts. I could always try to temp there, but we'd have to figure out the vehicle situation... Not a bad idea, though. Thanks again!

I wish I were in a position to volunteer for Obama.... he is the first president I have believed in for a long time. It is hard to vote when one has a choice like the last election (tweedle dee or tweedle dum)? Try a Labor spot... like I said, lousy work but immediate pay. It would only be a couple of weeks... or try the catering company and explain that you sure could use the $$$ asap. I have found many willing to work with a good employee on that.... cheers, amiga.

You should definitely volunteer for Obama. Even if only for a day. I know what you mean about him being the first one to believe in in awhile. Thanks for the recommendations!

If you've remained a legal resident of one state while working seasonally in others, you may be able to get some benefits from your home state, but most likely not unemployment benefits. All states I've worked in require you to pay into your unemployment compensation fund through payroll withholdings, and it takes months or a couple years to build up enough to be elegible to begin withdrawing claims from the fund.

Other assistance programs may be available though, check your state and county websites.

On the other hand, if you change residency, getting a driver's license and mailing address in each state you work in, you may not have many options in the way of assistance.

Looks like you are going to be Unemployed by choice, as in "not working because, Traveling, Wedding, Honeymoon, Political Activity, etc."

Your call but I am not certain any are valid reasons to File.

No longer "being available for Work" as a requirement?

You file with the state you reside in that state will transfer UE benifits from the state you worked in. I know this because I just filed with Nevada and worked in Wyoming and Montana. Go on the internet and google your state Employment Dept go into that website. Look for the link file a new claim fill out all the questions then you will still have to call a UE office and answer some more questions. Hope this helps.

Very interesting answers. My husband works in Wisconsin, but is a legal resident of Illinois. He gets laid off each summer, and files for unemployment during that time. He must file through the state of Wisconsin. My sister is a legal resident of Wisconsin, but works in Illinois. She also gets laid off for the summer, and files for unemployment in Illinois.

I wonder if certain states have agreements with each other. I also wonder if working for short periods of time has an effect on where you must apply.

To be safe I would start with your legal resident state, and see what they say.

I just went on unemploment and I'm a legal resident of Minnesota living this winter in Wisconsin and worked the last two years in Alaska and California. I think you should apply.

Well it would be in Massachussetts bc the coupany that you last worked for has to pay some of your un-epmployment........but there are some gudielines such as......if you were fired they can fight it or if you were laid off due to season work they cant really fight it...and it verys with in state lines.....you can go online or the town you live in now you can go to a job works place...and they can help you more than I could...But i do know you want to file as soon as you can be cause you can be on hold is where you wont get your first check for 6 to 9 weeks......and after you file you have still look for a job and check in with them every week for 3 months that being bc you can only get it for 3 months. You can still work just not a whole lot like a part time job a couple of hours a week

I hope this helps
