Has anyone here ever used the Alaska Marine Highway ferry service to go to and return from Alaska?
I think aggie did.
Yep...I did. Road it from Bellingham WA to Haines AK. Took 2 1/2 days. Cost $900 for truck, $300 for a 2 bunk inside cabin, and I was "free". It was a nice ride .... I would highly recommend it. You will save money if you bring your own food/drinks ... they have a microwave you can use.
That sounds pretty nice. If I ever get back to Alaska I will have to try that.
I've taken it from Juneau to Skagway, and Skagway to Juneau. It's a nice ride, and considerably less expensive if you don't have a vehicle and you don't get a room. You can just nod off in one of the many chairs around. Lots of people put up tents on the solarium deck. I highly recommend bringing a camera. There are some girls I work with who just hung out on the deck from Bellingham to Skagway.
They are building two new ferries. For winter time use and summer time use. They will be larger in size. Less than two years they will be in service for the first time.
