Hello, 

I'm looking for any recommendations on jobs or companies that might be out there.  I'll spare you my resume, and get straight to the point.  myself and my partner want to get back into the seasonal work in the states and I thought I would ask for any recommendations for a nice place for a couple to work.  Looking for a small business, and prefer something with a bit more responsibility.  Not as worried about location, just looking for leads.  We do both love cold climates though.  

Last year we worked at a small outback resort in Australia, called Arkaroola.  5 Months of that was amazing.  I did maintenance/bartending, she did front desk/housekeeping/restaurant.  By trade I work in multimedia production and she is a hospitality professional.  We have been working seasonally for awhile, so I am very familiar with the industry.  

So yeah, PM me or post you're experiences for seasonal jobs that are fun for a hard working couple.  Thanks in advance.

Since the US is a pretty big place, and the summer season is drawing to a close, it's hard to give you specific recommendations. You should consider work in Washington, Idaho, Montana, or Wyoming if you like cold climates. Alaska isn't really an option due to the short season and extremely high cost of living.

The most available jobs for couples that would seem to fit your requirements are RV park jobs, where the couple runs the place. The idea is that the employer gets two 24-hour, 7-day-a-week employees in return for what would be minimum wage for a single employee+one RV space with hookups. The male member of the couple is supposed to be an on-call plumber, electrician, janitor, lawn care jockey, and mechanic. The female member is supposed to spend 14 hours a day running the office. They actually fill these positions because there are a lot of retired people living in their RVs who need to stretch a dollar and can't find any other kind of employment.

Thanks for the reply.  I can't say I'm totally sold on RV thing as we can't afford an RV...  but I'll take a look.  I'm not necessarily looking for a job immediately.  We have time and can hold off until the next summer season if the right place presents itself.  That might be the right idea.  

I'm just looking for suggestions of companies that are known to being accommodating for couples.  IE: shared room, willing to hire both of us, varied jobs available and fun work environment.  

What it boils down to is that we worked the perfect seasonal jobs in Australia last summer and are now back in the states looking for its equivalent here or even in the UK (Dual citizens).   We are two hospitality professionals, and looking for the balance of seasonal jobs.  In the mean time I will keep researching and slugging away at my current job in Chicago... 

Would love to hear any more suggestions if you folks know of anything we could consider.

Most of the major park concessioners will "make every effort" to house a couple together in the same room, though that room will be part of a dwelling that is shared with many others, and will NOT have a private bathroom. The lack of privacy and the horror of sharing living quarters with drunken, inconsiderate teenagers pretty much drives older seasonal park workers into the refuge of RVs. If you can manage to get hired for a managerial position, then there MIGHT be private housing as a perk--which makes those positions highly coveted. IMHO, the housing arrangements and what you are charged for them trump just about every other consideration, given that the pay is uniformly crappy wherever you go. Housing and food should be provided for free since being out in the middle of nowhere with no other alternative (no town, no apartments, no grocery stores) is a hardship that the job imposes on you, but since these companies hire mostly naive college kids, they can get away with siphoning off most of their paychecks to pay for squalid housing and crummy food (presumably, they're used to that from living in dorms).

The sad truth is that the national park concessioners aren't really looking for older workers, nor are they all that interested in couples per se. The smaller, private concerns on the fringes of the parks often hire couples, but only if they bring their own RVs, as housing and meals are rarely provided. While the sort of jobs you're looking for may be out there somewhere, they will be hard to find; in the summer, you'll be competing with hordes of college kids (not just from this country, either) who are eager to work illegally long workweeks for subminimum wage. While most employers, you would think, would value people with skills and experience, they really don't--what they want are naive teenagers they can push around. A mature person might step back and take a good look at how much work he's doing for how little pay. A teenager probably won't--making him a valuable (i.e., bargain) employee even if he has to be taught how to sweep the floor.

I would suggest, then, contacting park employers as soon as you see job postings at the managerial level--including those for year-round as well as seasonal positions. Find out what housing's like as poor housing can be a deal-breaker. Don't travel to a location without a signed employment contract--as many people have found out to their sorrow after driving a thousand miles, only to find that the job they were hired for has evaporated. Don't expect to be paid decently--you are supposedly compensated with scenery, not money. Working in or near a national park can be a fantastic experience, but that will be despite your job and employer, not because of them. (Don't expect to have any actual free time to explore your surroundings as six-day workweeks and 12-hour days aka "split shifts" are the norm.)

Wow, not sure how I missed this... but yes, we do enjoy hiking and many outdoors activities.  In Australia w went hiking all the time, although they called it Walkabout.  I am not so bothered about 12 hour days.  We did all that, 12 hour days, 6 days a week for 5 months.  The pay was very good though, $23 per hour, so that made it worthwhile.  

I agree, we are not looking so much for any old opportunity, but one we can enjoy and hopefully come back to.  Ideally it would be one with considerable responsibility and considerable pay.  I have never agreed with places that pay minimum wage and still charge for lodging.  

Peter, Yes, we're still looking for fun ideas for the next season somewhere in N. America or beyond.  Love the mountains too.  We live in Chicago now, and it's a great city, but I miss the outdoors.  I've got computer skills, maintenance experience, and customer service.  Thanks for replying, sorry my late reply....
