Are there ticks and chiggers in Yellowstone??

I know some of you are laughing and some saying "what's a chigger". I just wondered .. I'm thinking it is probably to cold up there for either of these to be a big problem? They are both a BIG problem where I live.

So, if you go hiking be sure to apply deet all over and that will take care of that issue. As to chiggers (I do know exactly what you mean as I grew up in the midwest where they are thick) there aren't many/any of those. However, same rule applies if you go hiking: apply a good layer of deet and you'll be fine.

Permalink Reply by Brandon on March 9, 2009 at 3:41pm: The ticks in yellowstone do not often carry lyme's disease, however they can, and more often carry other diseases that are at home in the rocky mountain west. Lymes disease is what I'm sure you are really asking about here, and is mainly a concern in the northeast, though cases are reported in the ozarks and appalacia, though very rare.; ▶ Reply to This

Permalink Reply by Ann Carr on March 9, 2009 at 5:14pm: Yep, there are Chiggers and Ticks in Yellowstone. However, you just have to make sure your pants are tucked into the top of your boots and away you go... be sure to spray your legs with a good pesticide and you should be okay though.

As to what a chigger is, hmmm - you know that little red dot in the middle of the spot that itches and it won't stop itching? that is a chigger. The only known way to kill them before you claw your skin off is to apply clear finger nail polish. Good luck on your adventure to Yellowstone. It is pretty there...; ▶ Reply to This
