My CoolWorks

Living & Working in Great Places

I am in my 50's and have a very diversified and good work record. I've been in various degrees of management and have good skills. However, I have a felony on my record that is over 30 years old, when I was young & extremely stupid. Does anyone think that would be held against me if I apply to any of these companies that advertise on CoolWorks? Some of them say on their application that they do background checks. Does anyone know if they just run background checks for the last 10-15 years, or will they run your whole adult life? Any help would be appreciated. It appears the seasonal business is a tight business and word would get out quickly. I am an honest, dependable person. Thanks to all who can answer.

I have to disagree with this one Scott, the internationals do go through extensive process to be able to get there work visas. They have to go through there own customs countries for that. I have worked with a lot of people from other countries who said they basically had to go through the ringer just to get there visa's to come over here. Back ground checks, mountains of paperwork, the money just to apply then the money just to fly over.

Don't dispute the fact that internationals go through a mountainload of paperwork to get here nor that it is expensive travel. It is all that. But Xanterra (can't speak for other companies) just doesn't have the resources to do extensive checks. I know from being on the inside and got this directly from a Park Ranger (who carried off many of the malcontents to Mammoth!).

Going through customs is not that big a deal. Getting a Visa isn't either. The original question was what type of checks are done on Park employees. The answer is, not that much.

Having said all this, I would disclose a felony on your application, if applicable, because if you don't and it comes to light later you most certainly will get fired. But, the process for discovering a person's criminal past is greatly flawed. Really, about the only way it would come out is if there was some interaction with Park Rangers who then had cause to run their own check. They are VERY thorough!!! They won't miss a thing.

So be it but after working over 10 years mainly for Xanterra and talking with the internationals themselfs I know it to be a very big deal for them. No your right over her they don't check that much thats not saying what go's on in other countries. I am quite aware of what the question is and I was answering your reply not the actual question, which I already answered. Thanks

I've worked with people in several places over the years you know are not so kosher as a human being and sure enough most of those people were hauled off by the rangers. What makes it even better is that these are in places where there background checks aren't a big deal. they don't go out of there way to look into what you did 10 15 years back.

Howdy ! I'm 64 & my felony was commited in " 63 ". I've gotten jobs off Cool Works since 2000. I'm upfront about my past. I have a DANM GOOD resume & references. My feeling is " their loss is my gain ". Then you look at their turnover of help and you think maybe I really didn't want to work there anyway. All the apt. maintenance jobs I find in www. indeed.com & have applied for I recently found out they do background checks. Go with your gut feeling . I can pass any piss, hair or bowel test any time of the day. So sometimes I just avoid places the fron apon teenage mistakes. Take care
