Denali Seasonal Level 1 Advance cook or South Rim Grand Canyon full time prep cook?

I was offered a full time job for Xanterra South Rim grand canyon as a prep cook, or I was offered a seasonal jod at the Denali Chalet as an Advance cook level 1. I am a Culinary Student finishing up school, and I dont know what to do. My goal is to become a cook on a cruise line and I need some advice on where to go. How is housing, and will i be able to save money how hard is it to find work in alaska after the season is up if I wanted to stay. Any suggestions o recomendations.

I have actually Worked in Both Locations, Strangely enough and quite different than i think some will want to admit, I think that you will be much happier at the Grand Canyon, Several reasons, as a full time cook at the canyon, you will get better housing, It is given out on a point basis, and you get the bigger/better housing depending upon your position, and you will have your own bathroom facilities in this housing, In Denali, you have to go outside to the bathroom or to take a shower ( Brisk at 40 degree's) or go to the bathroom, and can seem very far if you are just waking up in the middle of the night to relieve yourself, and you have to walk in the cold (Very Bright Sunlight) some times a hundred yards to to Tinkle. Also, I know some of the Managers of the Ecafe and restuarants in Denali, and you have less micro managing at the Canyon. Those are a few things, ( oh yes, for an actual cook, I think the money at the Canyon is a little better, but not 100% sure on that part)
I hope this helps, Please ask if any other questions

Sorry, Also, in Alaska after the season is up, you might want to consider that it gets down to 40 and 50 below in winter depending on where you are, and the cost back and forth to Alaska takes a huge chunck out of your seasonal earnings. The Main Upside, if you deside to do it for just one summer is that It is Beauty like you will never see again, of course I feel the same way about the Canyon. Oh yea, something I forgot , and never would have believed if I hadn't experienced it myself, The Mosquitos in Denali are Huge and Vicious,

I have been told the grand canyon is just a whole in the ground not much to do.

The thing that gets me is i will be a prep cook level 3 at the grand canyon and in denali i Will be a level 1 advance cook for chalet resort. it is almost beyond me to be a prep cook after just paying 50000 for culinary school. I lived in tahoe so the cold dose not bother me. I just want to save money for a few months. but on my resume a level 1 looks much better then a prep cook.

I'm currently working at the Grand Canyon with interest in working in Alaska and I worked on a cruise ship last year. Pay is pretty good on the ship and is okay at the canyon. Housing sounds like its much here than in Alaska cause ALL of it is indoors. There's no going out in below 0 weather to take care of business. There are dorms here along with coupled dorms and even apartments. Dorms are $16/week. Apartments here are very affordable as well. $200 for an efficiency and alittle more for a 1 bedroom. It is hard to find work in Alaska as that's what I'm doing right now. Any questions you have I will be more than glad to try to answer.

how did you find the cruise job? Is there stuff to do at the canyon? I have been hearing that the houseing situation is terrible at the canyon, and that Xanterra suck any truth to this?

I 1st discovered the cruise line job in the classified and they were having a job fair in my local area. I attended it and was hiring on the spot. There's plenty to do here at the canyon. Hiking, aerial tours, smooth water rafting, bus tours and more. Depending on what dorm you're in it may not be a good experience. Your position determines what housing you will be giving. You will also be able to get an apartment if you're interested.
