Living & Working in Great Places

My mom says they do sometimes and I was just curious. How much on average did you receive from tips regardless of your location? Thanks so much!
By the way, I will be working in Yellowstone but they have not decided where.

When I worked housekeeping at a local hotel we only got tips if the guest was nice enough to leave one..which was almost never! This summer where I'll be working I'll get a split of the tip pool at the end of the summer, not sure how much since this is my first summer working there.

I am not sure how there doing it this year in Yellowstone but in all the years I worked there, all the tip money actually went into a pool to be split at the end of the season. Though there was some that would take the cash and pocket it for themselves.

So if you wasn't there at the end of the season you got no split of the tips.

Hi Rachelle! I have worked Yellowstone NP in housekeeping this past summer season and also just left from the winter season. Housekeeping had a tip pool; cash tips left in rooms were collected and equally divided on a bi-weekly basis (the non-payday week); other tips, which were written into tours, etc., appeared in the paychecks. Anyone who was handed a tip directly from a guest could keep it, which sometimes did happen. How much we'd receive would vary and was unpredictable. I will say however, that over the summer season the tip money certainly covered my incidental expenses, and paid for a number things such as excursions, a little shopping, etc. I saved most of my tip money anyway, which took care of my expenses at the end of the season. I go to Rocky Mountain NP this summer, so best of everything - you'll love the experience, regardless of what location. I was at Mammoth Hot Springs and loved it! Regardless, you'll be working with great people!

Glad you read my reply! You didn't mention if you're going to be a room attendant or in some other position. I was a Houseperson (Porter) at Mammoth, so I also received tips from guests occasionally when I delivered items to their rooms. But this was few and far between. If you are given Mammoth HS you will have Ron Wilbur as Housekeeping Manager, and he is terrific. Oh I almost forgot - if you've been hired as an RA, you will have an additional incentive, based on number of rooms completed in what time frame, which will be explained to you in training. This will kick up your pay substantially. I'll be happy to try to answer any questions that you might have if I can.

Sorry, I will be a Room Attendant but will not know where until I arrive in Yellowstone, according to Xanterra HR.

Here on the south rim Tips are up! I heard around that some housekeepers can get up to 30 bucks in one room and they don;t pool it here probably because we're year round. As a hostess i earned about $60 in tips but had to split it 3 ways .

You will receive some tips, usually b/w five and ten bucks, but don't rely on it. The main tips you'll be getting will be leftovers. Each room usually contains at least one of the following: a couple beers, a half-bottle of wine, cheese, cereal, milk, fresh fruit, summer sausage, chips, coffee, OJ, salsa, and popcorn. It might not sound like much right now, but trust me. After a long day of making beds and cleaning hair out of tubs, some free beer and chips sounds pretty good.
