Living & Working in Great Places

Okay guys, I need some input.

Should I go to the North Rim or Glacier National Park?

I've been scouring coolworks for info on both parks, and everyone
from the North Rim seems like a great group, and really enthusiastic.

So I wanted to ask how you guys liked the North Rim compared to your other
seasonal jobs?

From what I gather, the North Rim has much better housing, and I just get good vibes from the place overall.

However, the Glacier area looks amazing, lots of green. I was wondering if anyone knew how much they charge for housing, meals, etc.?

I'm leaning toward the North Rim, but I just wanted to get some reassurance.
So all you North Rim people, what do you like about it? What do you not like?
Same for anyone who has been to Glacier.

Thank you!

Just said room and board. I figure meal plan but laundry wasn't mentioned. I'm not counting on it. When I find out more I'll post. I should know in the next few days.

Unless I misunderstood the $11 covers room, board and food. I also wasn't aware you got it back if you finish the season... I hope that is true though!! The $100 deposit is correct and you get that back at the end of the season as long as you don't tear anything up I suppose.

Don't quote me on getting the $11 a day back. I got 5 phone calls in about 30 minutes from them I very well could have misunderstood.

I haven't worked at either place, but I have been to both areas, and in my humble opinion, I believe that Glacier National Park is a much more beautiful place to be. I've been plenty of national parks in the country and Glacier is by far my favorite (though i haven't been to alaska and those probably blow it away).

That being said, from what I've heard about living conditions in glacier, I hear they're pretty horrid. They also tend to be short staffed (once again, only what i've heard), which means you work overtime more, and don't get as much time to play. Glacier is also a pain to get around, as there is only one main road in the park, and it takes forever to get around. But it's amazingly beautiful and there's snow in some form year round, and it's truly in the middle of nowhere, so if introspection is your kind of thing, go there.

Forget the North Rim. Come to Glacier.

Ill be working in East glacier in retail this summer after seeing my gf go off & do it the past 2 years & have a blast. i've met a number of folks thru her that have been going there year after year & they are all really cool people. the $11/day covers food & housing, i believe laundry is free, plus there are free daily shuttles all over the park to GPI's other hotels & properties, as well as into Kalispell for shopping & whatnot. you also get a free park pass, free rides on the red tour busses, free food & housing if you choose to stay overnight at one of their other properties (including the one across the border in waterton park!) East glacier has a 9 hole golf course which is half price, there are discounts on guided raft tours, discounts for visiting friends & family that stay in the hotels, etc etc ...basically you get my point, lots of cool perks!!

the dorms are old-ish depending where you go, Many glacier i think just had new ones built & that is the best hiking spot & also the most remote property, & probably the best views too, with the glacier-carved mountains shooting straight up right outside your door & a clear blue lake in your front yard. the dorms in east glacier weren't too bad though, but i hear they can get noisy. but honestly how much time are you going to want to spend there anyway?

im not sure about scheduling for most positions but im pretty sure they try and schedule you to have 2 days off in a row at least, sometimes up to 4 in a row if they can, but it all depends on how busy they are im sure. and again this is just for retail, not sure how the other departments do it. youll probably be able to get a full 40 hours in the early & late season when there's fewer staff, but mid-season at peak vacation time they have enough staff to let you have your time off. early & late season the weather can be not the greatest time to be outdoors anyway, rainy & snowy quite a bit.

all in all i think it is an excellent package of cheap living, cool perks, cool people, and one of the most beautiful parks in the country. that being said, after this summer season i would like to head down south for the winter & try to get a job at the north rim! ;-) id rather spend the cooler winter down there than a roasting summer, glacier is very mild during the summer & not open in the winter so i think i can get the best of both worlds all in one year!

NR rim is not open in the winter

hmm maybe its the south rim then? i heard one of them was open year round...regardless i will be down south somewhere! i think zion & sequoia both have something open in the winter, eh thats a few months away before i am going to start worrying about that.

My final paperwork, which I am filling out presently, says I will receive a refund of all room and board charges upon completion of my contract. I will be in a management position and I have no idea if that is different than another position.

It usually means you are paid more, supervise people, and generally sleep in different quarters than non-management positions. Congrats!

and u have better housing also your refund is just another way of saying an bonus

Oh I know what the difference is. I meant as far as the refund was concerned.
