I was offered a job at the Grand canyon south rim starting on Nov 2 and I accepted the job. Any info you can give me would be great. I plan on being there untill Apr 2010.
I'm sure you know who I am....I recently left LCL. Dude, you should have asked me some questions before I left...lol. Oh yeah, my drive back was right in the middle of that winter storm that hit, and now I get to drive through some of those flooded areas on my way to AZ.
So, just until 4/10? I plan on being there indefinately (I should have never left). I hit the road this Thursday....but anyway, what did you want to know about? Did you ever get that attachment downloaded...the canyon informer? I can probably cut and paste it....but I dunno if I can do that in a general message like that....maybe I can e-mail a cut n pasted version to you. Let me know.
I'm sure you will love it there!! although I was there during summer, don't know how things are in winter..:/ what kind of job did you get? do you know yet what lodge you'll be working at?
Uh I'm just coming off my last "run" with Xanterra. I can tell you from experience mind your Peas and Q's
They were very upset from headquarters telling them they can't hire any more seasonal foreign exchange students and were taking it out long time employees. Although from what I've been told a vietnamese friend has accepted an internship from them. When I left in may I counted some 29 long time employees that I knew of who had either gotten fired or left between early winter(Novemberish) and spring time. Just be careful. Enjoy yourself It's quiet and the dorms aren't that bad in the winter because everybody's cleared out from summer. Make sure you check and double check your schedule. When you ask for days off just show up and make sure your covered. That's all I can say and have fun
You'll like the relative quiet of the dorms and common areas, since the staff is much smaller during the winter. The park itself is wonderful that time of year, and when it gets cold enough to snow down inside the canyon, you can get some terrific photos.
Be prepared to be VERY cold on occasion, as you're at 6000+ feet elevation, and northern AZ gets some of the heaviest snowfall in the country. You will also, however, have many brilliantly clear days. The surrounding area is great for exploration, so when a nice day coincides with a day off, be sure to get in your car and explore. You'll want to go to Flagstaff on occasion, both to shop, and to visit civilization once in a while.
You won't be terribly busy over the holidays, but the park isn't deserted, either. The surprise will come in March and April when things start kicking up big time--April is the park's busiest month.
Your employer will be a combination of the Russian army, the guy beating the big drum on the slave galley, and the Marquis de Sade, but that's pretty much normal for national park jobs. Just remember that the guy screaming in your ear probably can't afford the drugs that would keep his condition under control.
Wow, contgratulations. That's such a beautiful place of our country, I am sure you will like it there. How were your first days? Hope you had a good start and you like your job and colleagues.
I have been here about a week and a half now and went through all the orientations and so far things are going okay. The only down side is that I have to use the Rec Center for internet service because Victor and Maswick are out of service but o well it is beautiful here.
