i have tried it in northern washington during the winter on a waterfall. go with a outfitter, this sport requires a lot of expensive gear. if you know someone that is into it and has the extra gear that would be good, but usually they only have gear for themselves. some climbing shops have the gear for rent, but i would still go with an outfitter at least once so you learn all the safety stuff.
There are outfitters near the Matanuska Glacier, near Milke 108 on the West Glenn Highway in Alaska. I was near there at Sheep Mountain and empoloyees could get to go free as long as there was space available.
