Living & Working in Great Places

I am looking for a fly fishing partner/mentor that would be willing to teach me how to fly fish. My Dad pasted away a year ago before he could pass this skill down - so I am working on "plan B". He did leave me a nice fly rod and reel, and a few flies - so I am ready to learn! I'll be staying in Fishing Bridge from May 25 to Sept 8. Let's go fishin together on our days off.

Good news ... I finally got around to checking out the ycerp.org web site and read about the fly fishing seminars that were offered last year. Hopefully they will repeat this again in 2009, as it sounds as if we could all use some basic instructions before catching all those trout. See all you fishermen (and women) soon .... sharpen your filet knives :-)

OK fellow fly fishing wanabees ... I took my first (and only) lesson on fly casting today. I was shown the proper way to do the overhead cast, the side cast, and the rolling cast. These are the basic casts that one needs to master first. I was also told about fly rods and reels, and how to makeup your fly line+leader+tippet+fly. There was not enough time to go over the various knots, and advanced casting techniques such as "shooting" the line to extend the length of your cast. There was time to try the three basic casts a few times, but the instructor suggested we go out on our own and just practice what he showed us. So I am headed for a big grass field near my house to practice more. When I meet up with you I can show you what he showed me. Before we actually go fly fishing together it might be worthwhile just finding an empty field and practicing basic casting techniques. This could make for a more successful fishing trip when we actually head for the stream.

If you have any fly fishing questions you can ask Walter at the bell desk at the Old Faithful Inn. Walter has been working in the park for years and is one of the best, also very entertaining. There will also be lots of employees at Lake that fish.

Safe travels,

Wendy

EeeeeGaaaads....I am going to miss the Fly Fishing seminar at Lake Lodge on May 21! One of my future fly fishing buddies needs to go to this thing and take some good notes! Check your YCERP calendar for details (probably posted in the EDR). Let me know if ya plan to attend.
