I think you still can. I think it goes into law this summer, June or so. I drove down last year, but i got my passport just in case. It makes it easier to get through.
if you are going with out a passport, be sure to have tons of id. and your birth certificate. and any other government id you can come up with.

From what I have read, there is not a problem in leaving the U.S., it's getting back in when you pass from Canada into the U.S. Better safe than sorry, you may still have time to get a passport!!

They wanted a passport from me in 2004... and charged me 200.00 (temporary resident, I became) to go across when I didn't have one. Your passport is an important i.d. now; I recommend it.

This sounds like a scam you shouldnt have to pay to cross the border

I picked up a magazine while in Canada at Whistler, but haven't fully read the article yet. You can view it on-line here. It's all about the new laws and proper ID and the changes going into effect on June 1, 2009.

per my newspaper today: "Currently, passports are not required to enter the country from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. Beginning June 1, a passport book, passport card, or other government-approved travel documents must be presented at land borders and ports of entry."

A passport is just an important document to have, Dominic. Bite the bullet, do the requirements, you won't regret it. You will need it coming back this fall, so why wait? Renewing them every 10 years is even easier. So don't delay, do it today.

You can apply for a passport online. Princess in Alaska recommended we have a passport if we planned to travel into or thru Canada last summer. Apassport is good to have for identification purposes and for being able to complete a W-9 as part of your employment.
