Living & Working in Great Places

I have worked 'seasonally' for the last 4 summers and, though I never have, I heard mention of being able to claim unemployment when the season ended. That certainly would stretch the money a little farther. Does anyone know if it is even possible (or would I be jeopardizing my chance of rehire if I claimed it?) I know that we fill out papers at the end of the season that officially ends our employment with the company and then are rehired at the beginning of the next season. Any ideas about this?

Each state varies with it's unemployment claims. Currently, I'm in Arizona and one of the papers signed in the beginning of the season states that you know the work is seasonal and they don't pay unemployment for seasonal work. But I've been in both Idaho and Vermont, and I know people who stay there that claim while they only work the main season. You'd have to check the various state laws for requirements and availability.

I've collected every time that I've finished a season. If you work in one state and live in another you can still claim against the state you worked in. I'm collecting now and am living in ohio but filing in Calif. And Wyoming. Check it out, most states have everything you need online, you don't even have to leave the house to file usualy or collect your checks.

I worked in Denali last summer for Princess Tours and live in Minnesota. I was able to file a claim in Minnesota and receive unemployment benefits. I discussed this with other employees at Denali and they also file each year in their home state. However, you need to find out from your Unemployment department their specific requirements. For example Minnesota requires a minimum of two consecutive quarters with a specific minimum per each month of the quarter. I hope this info helps.

Thank you so much for the answers. Here's another question. Has anyone filed unemployment then been rehired for the next season by the same company? I am worried about being 'red-flagged' by the company.

and to meet at least Oregon's requirements you will have to be terminated for lack of work, not sure how to put this,
but just completing your season and leaving, would not be enough per se, they would generally want something that there was no other work available.

that might explain the difference in some of the "not get unemployment for seasonal work" comments above. the caveat would also be no additional work available.

it ties back to did you leave the work when you wanted to or your employer terminated you due to lack of work, which is probably how seasons are established
