Living & Working in Great Places

I've sent in two applications so far, and I'm wondering if it's ok to apply at more locations. I'm afraid if I just leave it at two, I'll end up with nothing this summer. How many apps do you guys send in every year?

You can never be to limited when it comes to applications. Just get out and start filling them out. Once you have them read over every thing and take your pick which you feel would be best for you. You never know those two might not be that one magical place that would work for you. It's better to have many options then just a couple.

I apply at the places I want to work at whether the number is 7 or 27. Most places hire a fraction of the applicants; Why take the chance at not getting hired? Apply to as many places you want. I remember only one employer having an issue with an applicant applying to more than a couple of places and I promptly crossed him off my list.

If a company has a problem with that and seems to want to control what folks do I make it a rule of thumb to steer clear of those places. The only time they can do that is if you are already in there employ. But if you are not they can not tel you where to apply or how many places to apply for.

Thanks you guys.I guess I'm just worried because I'm only 20 years old, and I don't have a very long resume.I do; however, have great references from the jobs I have had. What should one do if you get a job somewhere, and then you get another job offer a few weeks later that you like better?

again that depends on if you are already employed by them. if you are and your at the location and decide to apply elsewhere and do get a better offer you can quit but you can't keep that prior place as a reference. most places look for those they feel are going to be steady and dependable, if you quit a job so soon it will reflect on your record. So again do a lot of research first and do not jump into anythig right away. Make dang sure that place is going to work out. Just take your time.

I would not leave a job for another if I was already out there working.:)

What I do is not necessarily what I'd suggest to other people. I now do one application at a time. Sometimes, like the one I have out currently, is at a company that has multiple locations. But sometimes it's one position at one place. I'll wait a couple of weeks and if I don't hear a response, I'll move on. Some of it is just cockiness. Some of it is a stubborn focus. A lot of it is because, so far, I've had as many offers as applications and I hate making the final decision and turn offers away just to think later 'if only.'

But I have many years of resort experience and several decent references. I would suggest making as many applications that fit your needs.

Hi we are new to this and im wondering how far in advance should we apply for postions? We are looking start to start work in Sept 2009. Thanks in advance for any info.

Sept. is bad timing to start work, although Fall season in New England (Maine, Vermont, etc. should be o.k.). The reason is that is the summer jobs are ending in Sept. The winter positions should start in Nov. to Jan. depending on whether you are going for Florida or ski resorts (ski resorts obviously will depend on the snow season). A good time to start the winter hunt is in Aug. - Sept.

Wow the first summer I did the seasonal dude ranch thing I applied to about thrity of them... these places get sooooo many apps it's good to keep your options as open as possible. Also, it is a really god way to choose where you want to be. I was offered positions at quite a few places and was able to talk to them all and choose where I thought I would be happiest for the summer. This will be my fourth season there and I am not the head wrangler so it certainly worked to my advantage.. I say apply, apply, apply!!!

hope that helps
