Living & Working in Great Places

Hey all! I just joined coolworks, with the hopes of finding a great job this summer!
I was planning to apply to Sol Duc Hotspings (Olympic National Park in Washington State) because I actually live here in Washington and for me, it'd just be a matter of packing up my stuff in the car and drivin'

Anyone else applying there...?
I looked at the website for potential employers and it didn't say much.
I was thinking of applying to be a housekeeper, because I have almost 6 mos. of house cleaning experience under my belt.
But, if you've worked there previously, what job (in your opinion) was the best, offered the best hours, best co-workers, etc??
Making money really isn't too much of an issue for me. I just want to have fun!! :)
I'm 21, (will be 22 this summer) so would you say there'd be a lot of people around my age working there? Younger? Older?
How long does the season last?

Is there a real sense of community... if you've worked there in the past, did you form close bonds with people? Lotta partying?

Any help/input/feedback at all would be great!

Thanks! :)

If you want to find out about a place, type the name in the search box. You'll usually find something. If you wanna know what the the best job is, let me give you a little advice. You want to work in the pool booth. It may not sound like fun, and could be boring if you don't read, but once the season starts rolling, you'll have a blast. You got a cake job and you're right next to the smoke pit, which is sweet even if you don't smoke. Everyone congregates back there throughout the day to get away from guests and you can slack off for a minute and go hang out.

Partying? yes. They were talking about forcing a no-drinking policy after last year (we got out of hand on a few occasions to put it mildly), but there seems to be no truth to the rumor. Bonfires on Pebble Beach and at No Majors were the best. One night we had a wear-what-you-found-in-the-pool-booth party. There is a massive lost and found in the pool booth because tourons always leave their shit by the pools. So one night we got a keg, dressed up in outrageous clothes from the pool booth, and had a bonfire at Pebble. The night was one for the ages. Check out that link and if you've got any more questions, just ask.

Hey Grant,
I've actually already done that (typed the name in the search box in the forums). I just started this thread to see if people had more input beyond that. :) Okay, that's a good tip. I will definitely make Pool Booth Operator my 1st choice.
Wow, that Pebble beach bonfire sounds like it was a blast. Heck, a bonfire on ANY beach would be a blast!! Sweet... are you moving on to new pasture this summer or returning to Sol Duc?

I would say my 2nd choice would be housekeeper then, but (again, while searching on the forums) I saw that it might be one of the hardest, most demanding positions there... is that true? What did you work as?

Also, what day/month (specifically) does the season start up... april? may? june?

I'm not really sure at this point whether I want to go back or try a different park. Olympic is probably the sweetest park in the country, but I'd still like to try something new.

Pebble is actually a river beach, but is still sweet nonetheless. That's where you'll probably spend the majority of your nights. Take a headlamp! Otherwise, walking out there in total darkness is kinda difficult. If you want to have an ocean beach camp night, Second Beach is where its at. I mean, have you ever seen "The Beach" with Leonardo DiCaprio? Its like that. Gorgeous.

It's true. Houskeeping at the Duc is pretty demanding. I would say its the toughest job. I worked front desk, a really fun job but comes with lots of responsibility and is the toughest one to get. You have to be a good multi-tasker and people person. I was taking reservations, answering phone calls, doing check-in and out, running retail for the small grocery store and gift shop, and restocking everything. I'd say the next best thing to pool booth is barista. Kara spent her mornings playing guitar on the clock in the espresso hut. If you don't play guitar, you can always crochet or read. I'm not sure if its typical, but we didn't open the hut until May, so you might not be able to do that right away.

They'll open on March 31st, but if you want employment prior to that, there's plenty of prep work to get ready for the season. The gift shop and restaurant stock have to be moved to the basement, cabins have to be prepped, and there's plenty of general cleaning to be done. You could probably get employed for the week prior to opening. Also, if you show up that early, you'll probably have more than one job and make a lot of money in the process. I arrived last April 12th and I was one of thirteen employees. Breakfast servers would go to housekeeping in the late morning/afternoon, then return to serve dinner. The GM was the lifeguard. It was kinda funny to be on such a small squad. It picks up as the season goes, and you'll have like 60 employees by June.

Good luck. Hope all goes well for you. I had the time of my life last summer. I'm sure you'll find the same :)
