My CoolWorks

Living & Working in Great Places

Hi everyone,

I'm a college student and would like to take a year off next year and work a seasonal job, preferably somewhere out west.
I worked at a lodge last summer, but I didn't apply for any jobs until May and was lucky to get that one.
Anyway, next summer I will be able to start the beginning of June and work until the end of the season, or as long as needed.
My question is, when should I start applying? December? January? Should I be filling out applications as we speak? Is there a place in coolworks where employers advertise or something when they are filling positions, or should I just find places that have a summer season and apply to them?

Hi Marie,

The early bird employers have listed their 2009 summer jobs already on CoolWorks.com and are accepting applications now. However, most employers will really start to review applications in January, but now is a good time to start researching employers so you're ready to apply next month.

Rick just posted a great blog post about "Deciding Where to Apply." It's definitely worth a read and hopefully will help you to narrow your field of interest.

Parting thought, having the ability to work through the end of the season will be a big plus with the seasonal employers, because so many college students go back to school before the season is really done. Use this fact to your advantage.

Best,
Kari

I know Lake Powell is accepting applications now.

I think most places will be accepting applications now, but don't be surprised if you wait until January to hear from them. When hiring, there is a lot of concern for employers to hire people in December if the position doesn't start until May. Often people will change their minds over the course of the 4 month wait and then the employer has to redo everything. I think your best case for applying is in the last week of December.

Marie:

We would hold "Open" a Position for Returning Staff until Jan1, at which point we would begin to look for Replacement Staff.
I would suggest two things:
1. If you find a place that you really, really want to work for keep after them, make certain that you call after you have sent your Application just to make certain it was received and ask what your next move should be.
2. Us that "End Of Season" Date to your advantage, it is worth an awful lot in the Seasonal World.
