Living & Working in Great Places

Hi,
I just got offered a job working for 8 weeks with Xanterra in Yellowstone National Park. I have to show up on August 20th. Originally, I was really excited about this job. I thought of it as a great adventure, a great story, and an interesting temp job. Then, I started to really think about the fact that I would be in the middle of nowhere with no access to anyone or anything I have ever known.
Then, I started to do research on the company and found all kinds of negative information. Apart from the "slavery" like work conditions, people also said a lot about how racist the company was.
I'm a smart, hard-working, quick-study kid. I'm not looking to get promotions in this job. I'm looking to work there for 8 weeks (I always work hard), enjoy the park, come back home, and look for a permanent job.
I am however, concerned about the racism allegations. I know that complainers exist in every job, and the reason that I am posting on this forum is to find out if that is really true.
I'm an Asian girl. So I don't look stereotypically American
I was just wondering what people had to say. I won't have a car with me.
Let me know what you think about the job overall.
Oh, and the job offer says that I will be a Host.
Thank you.

i disagree with the racism part of your post, but then again i am caucasian. i have had MANY black friends in the parks and they never experienced any racism and some were eventually promoted to managerial positions.

when you say "this place sucks" i hope you are talking about xanterra and not the park. otherwise i would say your experience stemmed from some other event which caused you to be bitter. yes xanterra sucks, the park itself and the surrounding area is absolutely amazing and is my home, so choose your words carefully.

for those who come to the park to party, i would like to say: you are ruining it for other people. not everyone is still in high school and wants to listen to you shotgun a beer at 3 am before a breakfast shift. to me that kind of thing has always been immature and could be done back home in the 'burbs where you are from. i can have a good time while drinking or not.

Ok, I don't understand the locking you down part. They do have a no tolerance policy for underage drinking. They do allow people underage to go to the pub for something to eat, listen to music, have a soda, and have fun with their friends. They also try to enforce quiet hours but that is so those who get up at 4 or 5 in the morning(such as me) can sleep. I agree with Brenda, yeah its a big company with it's down sides, but never seen racism.

As far as laundry detergent goes, Purex does have a sheet that is soap and fabric softener that is about the size of a book for a package. It works great.

i used to work at yellowstone in the laundry the only thing ive seen is alot of favortism with the internatiols and this is comming from an black person i work at denali i;ve never experiance any racism here but at the job fair i went to this week there was this resort in fla that shot down every black applicant down by saying it was fill but offer the same job to the next person which was white and my wife which is white was shot down cause of me

Reggie, weather your wife is black or white, hispanic or native american, one Big word LAWSUIT. Course that is an area that is extremely hard to prove in courts unfortanately. Look at it this way though, because they denied her a position that just means that place was not the place ment for her, there is bigger and better out there. By the way wear ya gonna go after this stint. you could always try up here.

iits still up in there air right now but were leaning towards aiyeska ski resort here in alaska and aslo copper mountian is looking at us

hey reggie, alyeska is a sweet place. i stayed in girdwood for awhile, but never worked there. the mountain has very low ligt in the winter, and it can be tricky to ski or board in that kind of lighting. either way good luck, it is a beautiful place.

Reggie, if you know for a fact that after you were told the position was filled, then they hired the next person which was white, you can file a complaint with the EEOC. You don't need a lawyer to file with them. They have a toll free number to call.

Reggie, what about Minnesota??? We were hoping you were looking here too.

The letter of recommendation is normal for Yellowstone if you haven't worked for the company before. so it is possible they have worked for Xanterra at another location. I will have to agree with Reg that they due tend to favor the internationals but many of the big companies do as they are willing to work to work as many hours as needed and do the jobs others don't want.

Does any one know the policies for having a car?? are they very strict with lisences when you register or what is the deal. I am from Va and wasnt expecting much hassle but from the looks of all your posts it seems like it could be very strict.

you must show registration and insurance at the visitors center and get a sticker for your window

I think it's always difficult when you start in a new company. I had a lot of jobs so far and for me often good looking jobs turned out to be bad and vice versa. So I would give it a chance and see how things really are, it's always questionable what some people (who got laid off) post on the internet. I had problems myself at my workplace because I was dating to of my female colleagues at the same time and it came out. I know that it was quite stupid but I liked them both. Had a very tought time with the two at work. I think I won't ever date a co-worker, probably I'll keep on looking for a woman on the reputable dating sites. Really like online dating, my success in clubs and bars was really limited, probably that's the way for me to find love.
