Living & Working in Great Places

I applied for Sales Associate in Yellowstone with Xanterra. I worked there as a Room Attendant (RA) this summer and got a good HIG (review). I applied for late May through mid August. I have no retail experience so I was wondering if I still have a good chance at getting the job. By the way, this RA job is the only "real" job I have had, as the rest were all volunteer. That may hurt my chances. Thank you for answering!

You have a SLIGHT advantage over other applicants, in that you do have a history with the company--but they won't give that much weight if you're applying for an entirely different position (as you are). In their minds, you're an experienced RA and a totally inexperienced retail employee.

To improve your chances, you might see if you can report earlier than Memorial Day--that will give you a big leg up as most summer employees are college students, and they want to have SOME trained employees already in place before the first big weekend.

Thanks again for answering! I thought my lack of retail may cause a problem but I hope not. I see what you mean by the experienced RA thing though. I would do that job but it was not the most exciting. Unfortunately I have school so I can't go. That is finals week. I will have to cross my fingers. Thanks!

I would apply at Delaware North also if you are really interested in doing retail work....they have a lot of positions to fill in retail....possibly more than Xanterra. I know people have said negative things about DNC on this forum, but the same is true for Xanterra. To me the two companies are very similar as to the way they operate. I would try to work at a smaller store such as Bridge Bay or Roosevelt. I think the odds of having a good experience are higher at the smaller stores (in fact most Xanterra stores are small compared to DNC's big General Stores). Applying at both companies will increase your odds of success. Good Luck and have Fun with it!

Thanks for the help! I actually am considering DNC like you mentioned. Do they give a bonus at the end of season? Thanks!

I think you have as good of a shot at getting the job as anybody else. I know Xanterra hires foreigners with no job experience to work retail. English is their second language and they have no experience with US currency.

Thanks for answering! I am hoping it all works out.
