Living & Working in Great Places

OK, the definite slowest way to get around the country. But I know people who do it. i met a guy who works in Arizona in the winter, but lives in the midwest in the summer...he bikes it both ways. I've also met a guy on one of my trips that was bicycling around the country. I've given local directions in a few places for people making a cross-country trip.

Do you travel much this way? What kind of bicycle do you use...brand, touring, road, cross, mountain, recumbent? Best routes?

I'm really thinking about doing this some time. I'm still playing with the idea, but I have found many long-distance routes. I recently picked up a book at the local library called Cycling Arizona. I'll pass along a few tips soon. I'll also find some links to many of the routes that I have found.

Most of the roads in Arizona you are able to bicycle. There are some that you may not want to because of heavy truck/rv traffic. Also beware of elevation and heat for distance traveling.

From Cycling Arizona: The Statewide Road Biking Guide by Christine Maxa. Westcliffe Publishers ISBN: 978-1-56579-537-2

You are NOT ALLOWED on: [Almost all of these are in the Phoenix metro area]
State Route 51, State Route 143, State Route 153, and State Route 210
Loop 101 and Loop 202
US 60 from the Junction of 1-17 to Goldfield Road (MP 198)

Routes you CAN bicycle on include:
1-8 from the California border to Trekell Road (near Casa Grande)
1-10 from the California border to 99th Ave (Phoenix) and
I-10 from Valencia Road (Tucson) to the New Mexico border
I-15 the entire Arizona section
I-17 from Pinnacle Peak Road (Phoenix) to Flagstaff
I-19 Nogales to Duval Mine Road (near Green Valley)
I-40 the entire Arizona section
Loop 303 in the Phoenix metro area

There is also a bicycle version of the Arizona Trail which mainly follows rural roads and Forest Service roads from the northern border to the Grand north rim of the Grand Canyon, then from the south rim thru to the Mexican border near Patagonia
