I've stayed in both hostels and hotels. In my next trip I'm planning to check-out Hotwire.com, but otherwise I've used the Hosteling International website, hostels.com, and hotels.com.

Some of the hostels I've stayed at include: HI-Chicago, HI-New York, Chelsea International Hostel (New York), HI-Buffalo, HI-Washington, DC, HI-San Francisco City Center, HI-Boston and one in Hollywood and a second one in Boston but I'd have to look up at those names. The Tod in Las Vegas was listed as a hostel, but it was more of a cheap motel than hostel.

There is a lot of entries already on myCoolWorks about hostels. So like any decent search on this site:

I"ve never stayed in a hostel?? After working in a hotel I am afraid to use websites like priceline and orbitz?? Doesn't any one else feel the same way?? It is almost impossible to get billing issues etc taken care of and I find what they charge the guest is rarely cheaper than our regular rates. There have been times when people have need to leave early etc. and I cannot give the refunds or change their bill because they paid online. You also can't comp their room in the rare case that you need to.. I had this issue once when a couple was given very bad service by my hotel.

I'm glad you posted this! I don't think this is common knowledge. Now that I know, I will NOT use those sites. Good guest service needs the flexibility!
As for hostels...while I love the idea of the cheap price, I am leery of the lack of security for possessions.... I don't own much of real value but I do have a laptop and I don't want anyone hacking into it or stealing it. Plus, I'm concerned about staying in a place where some drunk guy might think he was entitled to jump me. Sorry, but I stay in motels/hotels for the privacy and security. I love meeting people but I fully believe that anyone's right to choose what they do ENDS where my body and possessions begin! Unfortunately, there are plenty of people that don't agree with me on that one.

I like deals like anyone else, I've just found that there seems to be a declining quality-level in the cheapest goods and services. So I try to get the best I can afford.... and learn to live with less in some cases.
