Living & Working in Great Places

Trends in the green industry change just a quickly as in the world of fashion. Yet new sustainable technologies benefit the environment enormously. CFLs were the wave of the future five to ten years ago, and they continue to save significant amounts of energy (75% more efficient than incandescents and last 10 times longer).

LEDs--which most of us are familiar with when we don our headlamps--are now emerging as the sustainable alternative. Unlike CFLs, LEDs do not contain mercury. And LEDs boast a staggering life--I've read about some that will last up to 100,000 hours! (it's mind-boggling to think a light bulb might outlive me.

LEDs are expensive, but more than pay for themselves by reducing operating costs. And like all new technologies, the purchase price will come down. If you haven't already, replace your incandescents at home with CFLs or LEDs and encourage your employer to do the same. Not only will you help save the environment, you'll also save money!

I think you're onto something. I've read that a significant part of the business case for LEDs is the labor saved by not having to climb up and down ladders etc so often to replace them.

I bought a few to use around my house last year and they work just fine for some applications and are getting better all the time. They draw 4 to 6 watts compared to 14ish for CFLs. I found mine at CCrane but they're starting to show up in more traditional placeslike Home Depot.
