Climate Change & Sustainability on Our Public Lands

Climate change and environmental degradation are threatening our public lands.

The predicted consequences are dire: If the average global temperature continues to rise, Glacier National Park may lose its namesake features in less than twenty-five years. In the Sierra Nevada, a degree or two of warmer temperatures means less snow, and as a result less snowmelt, which bodes ill for future visitors’ chances of viewing Yosemite’s famous roaring springtime waterfalls (at least in spring). Grizzly bears in Yellowstone may someday disappear as an invasion of beetles, able to survive the warmer winters, are gradually destroying the whitebark pine, a staple of the bears’ diet.

We can make a difference! The good news is that as people working and living in these special places, we have a chance to be a part of the solution. Our environmental efforts at work and home help ensure the survival of our nation's wilderness areas.

I met Beth when I worked in Yellowstone! The recycling program there, and the concern for the environment, is great. Though I noticed a lot of confusion on what trash was supposed to go where, in the EDR. One EDR employee (I applaud him/her) wrote a simple explanation over the garbage cans and it made an immediate difference. Too bad someone else erased it! I think explaining things in a simple manner, and starting small, is a great way to go. When i was safety lead at the OFI in 2007, I got the (boiling-hot) incandescent lightbulbs over the registers changed to CFLs.... better for the environment AND saved those of us sensitive to heat from headaches and etc. My big concern is finding ways to balance the needs of the earth with the needs of people.... I like Freecycling, and finding ways to implement environmental things that save and/or create jobs. I'm excited about being a part of the discussions here!

Beth is a passionate professional in the parks whose career is all about how to minimize the environmental impacts of operating these resort-type concessions in National Parks. She is tuned into best practices and I'm hoping that we can use My CoolWorks to share some green-love so that you all can share and learn and help green up your workplace, in other parks and elsewhere.

We live and work in the most beautiful places on Earth and you folks work at all levels of these organizations and move around in a way that could help spread the best tactics. We should be leading the way.

The environmental case is clear and the economics will follow.

Let's hear what's working out there.
