Climate Change & Sustainability on Our Public Lands
Climate change and environmental degradation are threatening our public lands.The predicted consequences are dire: If the average global temperature continues to rise, Glacier National Park may lose its namesake features in less than twenty-five years. In the Sierra Nevada, a degree or two of warmer temperatures means less snow, and as a result less snowmelt, which bodes ill for future visitors’ chances of viewing Yosemite’s famous roaring springtime waterfalls (at least in spring). Grizzly bears in Yellowstone may someday disappear as an invasion of beetles, able to survive the warmer winters, are gradually destroying the whitebark pine, a staple of the bears’ diet.
We can make a difference! The good news is that as people working and living in these special places, we have a chance to be a part of the solution. Our environmental efforts at work and home help ensure the survival of our nation's wilderness areas.

Yellowstone Nat'l Park joins 'zero waste' recycling movement
An antigarbage strategy is taking hold across the nation, with schools, national parks, corporations and restaurants working to not only reduce waste but to shun any packaging that is not recyclable and recycle everything that can be.

The Amphibian Extinction Crisis
Frog populations worldwide have been declining at unprecedented rates, and nearly one-third of the world's 6,490 amphibian species are threatened with extinction. Amphibians are faced with an onslaught of environmental problems, including pollution, infectious diseases, habitat loss, invasive species, climate change, and over-harvesting for the pet and food trades.
Beth Pratt, Director of Environmental Affairs for Xanterra Parks and Resorts at Yellowstone, will discuss these threats and explain how they affect various groups of amphibians. She will also discuss the necessary actions that must occur in order to prevent further amphibian declines and extinctions. Are you interested in learning about climate change and sustainability in our National Parks?
Beth Pratt, the Director of Environmental Affairs for Xanterra in Yellowstone will give a presentation on how climate change is threatening our National Parks across the country, from the shrinking habitat of the pika to the disappearing glaciers. Shell also provide examples of what the National Park Service, concessioners, and park partners are doing to combat climate change through sustainable initiatives like renewable energy, recycling, and alternative fuels.
