Living & Working in Great Places

Hi..I was hired last week by Glacier Park to start in May. They said they were going to process my fiances application too. Curious as to whether anyone here has anything to say about working for this company...the park..the preparation, etc. (Since this is our first year) I am soooooooo excited....

O'kay, something to carry water. Will I need something as big as a back pack? I'm still trying to find out about the cell phone service. Do you by chance know if there is service there?

Actually...many of the packs have a water bladder to carry the water in and a hose with a bite valve at the end so you can drink as you walk or ride a bike...the rest of the pack can serve to hold the few things you should not be without when you are hiking...esp.hiking alone...you just never know what you might encounter on the trail....as far as cell phone service...someone else should answer that one since im in Ohio dreamimg about doing what your about to do.....lol.lol....
If you have Verizon your cell phone will work at Apgar-you'll be able to take the shuttle there. Sorry no cell service at Lake McDonald
Hi Karen, I worked at Glacier in 2006 as a "jammer"; drove the famous red buses in Glacier National Park. It is beautiful there. I'm sure that you will love your stint there, as there are a number of Older and Bolder RV'ers there, and they get together for campfires and picnics (until the campfire ban goes into effect), as the threat of forest fires is always very high. The summer I was there, there was a fire that started near St. Mary's, and we could see the flames from Glacier Lodge. East Glacier is more remote than West Glacier, so having your own transportation will be nice. There is the tiny town of East Glacier which has several restaurants, etc. and Browning, the reservation town of the Blackfeet Indians. You will be close to Two Medicine, a less traveled and less known area of the park, but so beautiful.
Glacier Park Lodge has a wonderful front porch that I loved to sit outside on and just observe people-where they came from and about their experiences at the park, etc. The train (amtrak) stops right across the street at the train station, and that was always fun to watch the new tourists arriving. My own brother got off that train, and I got to show him the park. You will get to ride the red buses free (when they are not full), and ride the boats at Lake St. Mary's, Lake McDonald, and Two Medicine. I lived in the dorm for the older folk, and I had a room to myself, so I was happy as a robin with a worm. I didn't have a lot of work-so I didn't get rich, but I loved my days off, so it was a win win situation for me. Here's a tip for you. A girlfriend and I accidentally happened upto this: go to Big Mountain on a Friday night. They give free lift rides up the mountain. What an experience!! There was music up at the top. But it was so fun, and the view, undescribible! Enjoy. Cathy

Thanks, Cathy, for the wonderful ideas!! The lift up Big Mountain sounds like sooooooo much fun. Are you working seasonally this year as well? I am looking forward to doing everything out there that there is to do (that I can fit into the season anyway.) My favorite thing I am looking forward to is canoeing the Flathead River, and maybe getting on a horse after about 34 years!!! Will enjoy!! Karen

Hi again, Karen. I even applied to GPI, and was rehired, but then I backed out, just because it is so far away, and it will be so expensive just to get there and back. But, sometimes.....I could kick myself for that decision. Being a "jammer" is like the coveted job there-so fun, and you get to really see the park.
I have applied to all kinds of seasonal jobs this year, Martha's Vineyard, a Las Vegas Touring Co., farming in Oregon, Cedar Point, Put-In-Bay, Ohio, and just not hearing back from anyone, except Glacier. I am still rethinking that one! Who knows, I may end up there yet! I have a boyfriend in Montana, but he lives in Southwest Montana-about 6 or 7 hours away from Glacier. So it's him, or Glacier. Hum. Happy trails. Cathy

Hi Cathy - Alex your email buddy from 2006. I'll be heading back to Glacier in late May working retail. Your right gas prices made me think twice but I'll need the car its so isolated at East Glacier. The train is cheaper but it will be packed and I'll end up renting a car - it all evens out I guess - the bear grass and the mountains are so pretty. Air Planes will be worse packed to the gills. So much to do and see. The playhouses at bigfork and whitefish. The road to the sun and many glacier - cannot wait. I've been watching the progress of the snow plows
on the park service website for the road to the sun.
How did you find all those places to apply to in Oregon etc? Maybe I'll see you at east Glacier. Alex

Hi Alex! So nice to hear from you! Glacier always calls to me. I was actually hired back, but I have decided to try something different. Martha's Vineyard needs drivers terribly, and also Mesa Verda would like for me to come. Decisions, decisions. Which of the two would you suggest? Mesa Verda is very isolated, but I kind of like the peace and solitude of the quiet mountains, and Martha's Vineyard should have a lot to offer-help!! Or I could just stay home-nah! Enjoy Glacier Cathy

Hi Cathy - with gas prices I'd vote for Martha's vinyard. If I continue every year at Glacier I'd get a trailer out there and take the train to save gas. Where do you get your leads- how did you hear about Martha's Vinyard? Mesa Verde would get busy in the summer. I guess I may have to get something closer next year if things keep getting tight but there is lots of neat stuff around DC.

Have a good summer alex

Hi Alex,
Oh, I just check www.coolworks.com daily. I'm hooked on it. A lot of the employers are on there just a little bit, and if you don't catch them(jobs) when posted, you lose out. Anything that says 'drivers' or 'shuttle drivers' catches my eye. Martha's Vineyard pays $16.00 hr., and I just talked to them tonight. The are hurting for drivers. They are willing to train you if you stay for the season. Yes, it is closer, and it would be nice to spend a summer surrounded by ocean! I'm almost convinced. Cathy
