Skagway, Alaska Employees - Unite

I am a zipline guide for Alaska Excursions, I thought it would be a good idea to start a group for people working in Skagway, Alaska as well as other southest Alaskan locations. If you will be in Skagway, I would love to meet you and have you check out a zipline tour with me. I look forward to meeting fellow Coolworkers in the area. Please post where you are working and what you are doing. Have a great summer everyone!

I worked for Alaska Travel Adventures back in 2007. They are a very good company to work for in Alaska. I highly recommend them.

I worked with these guys as well . I live in juneau now and more than will to help if anyone needs rides from the ferry or anything like that . Or if ya want to see juneau if ya come early which I do recommend to get the lay if the land which is important to know for all those wonderful inquisitive tourists !!

Kelsey, actually, if you told me your position and which housing site you'll be living in, I could go into more detail.

Kelsey I worked for Alaska Excursions for three summers, ask away.  I can tell you from the start that it is a great company to work for.

Hello! well, i am thrilled to say that I have accepted a position with Alaska Excursions in Skagway, for the upcoming 2016 season! I am just a small town girl in Oklahoma with big dreams, so if anyone could give me some advice, it would be greatly appreciated! I've never been to Alaska, so not much of an idea of what i'll be walking into!

Hello! I am new to Coolworks! I have been offered a summer position in Skagway. I am currently living in NYC, but I grew up in the mountains of New York State (I know, they're hills compared to whats out west). This seems like a great opportunity to leave the hustle, bustle, and frustration of the big city behind for awhile and have a bit of an adventure. I wanted to know about other seasonal employees experiences, what they liked or disliked,  transportation, etc.

Brendan, you're comments about cost of living are very helpful, Thank you!

I'm looking forward to hearing about some of your experiences!

Thank you so much Brendan! That was really helpful, and since I have no idea what to expect, I can use all the help I can get! See you in Skagway I hope!

Also, if you use facebook, look up "skagway swap."  It can come in handy.  It's like an online garage sale for Skagway.

As far as availablity of products in town, it's ok.  The closest thing to a walmart in Skagway is the hardware store.  They have all sorts of things you really wouldn't expect a hardware store to have.  It's pretty much what you might call a "general store" without groceries.  They have a motto that goes something like, "if we don't have it, you don't need it."  The closest real Walmart is in the city of Whitehorse in the Yukon Terriory, which is a little over an hour drive one way.  It's a nice town, but costs a bit in fuel, which averages around $5/gallon in Skagway.  Canadian gas is sold by the liter, and is never cheap.  Between the grocery store and the hardware store, you'll find most of the things you'll need, generally speaking.  There is a Radio Shack in town, which doubles as a movie rental store and a tanning bed salon.

The one thing that is most difficult to find is regular day to day clothing.  There's plenty of places to buy clothes, but just about all of it is going to look touristy.  There's a couple shops in town that sell hiking gear and hiking clothing, but I don't think you'll want to wear that to the bar?  Oddly enough, there's a ridiculous amount of jewelry stores in Skagway.
