Living & Working in Great Places

I am looking for a fly fishing partner/mentor that would be willing to teach me how to fly fish. My Dad pasted away a year ago before he could pass this skill down - so I am working on "plan B". He did leave me a nice fly rod and reel, and a few flies - so I am ready to learn! I'll be staying in Fishing Bridge from May 25 to Sept 8. Let's go fishin together on our days off.

I don't know if they still do it but there were some peeps that came to the co-op/rec. dept and gave lessons early in the season. I think there was a trip or two to the river too..
At each location there is someone that is in charge of the co-op/rec dept. Contact them, they will know about it or might arrange something..
I've tried fly fishing but standing in that colld a$$ water isn't for me.. enjoy

Hi Richard, I'm a guide in the Madison Valley. I'm usually pretty busy during the season, but I would be up for some fishing sometime this summer. Keep in touch!

I love fishing...pretty good with a regular reel but never fly fished. I have a fly rod/reel but haven't learned to use it yet. Anyhow I arrive on April 24 to OF so I've got a month head start on you. Who knows maybe by the time you get there I will have learned a thing or two and if not then we can both start from scratch and see what happens.

Mark ... this sounds great. It will be like the blind leading the blind, but will likely be some fun. Besides, I need somebody to keep the grizzlies busy so I can high tail it outa there! Seriously, I am glad you replied and would love to go fishin with you (fly or otherwise). I'll try emailing you when I get there to setup a trip.

Richard and Mark if you would like another blind person I will be at OF on April 23. I was thinking about learning to fly fish also. I read somewhere that they have a class that the employee can sign up for. Here is a web site I found flyanglersonline.com/begin/101/

Ystone's rules are different that the rest of Wyoming.. check them out. Have fun

Yellowstone National Park fishing is open each day from 5 am to 10 pm, beginning on the last Saturday of May through and including the first Sunday in November. Exceptions are noted in area-specific regulations.

I hear you are supposed to file the barbs off your hooks because it is all catch and release...do you know if this is a fact??

Reply to This

Mark, you are correct. You must use barbless hooks in Yellowstone. You can file them off, or you can take needle nose pliers and crimp the barb against the shank so the hook becomes barbless. Crimping is quicker and easier.

Hey, I'm only 18 and I don't know much about fly fishing for trout, but I'd definitly go with you.

Sounds to me like we have a pretty full fly fishing class ... hopefully one of the guides will take us under their wing and show us the basics. I am definitely going to investigate the rec department program mentioned above. Is the rec program available to DNC employees as well as Xanterra and YNP employees?

oh i like to fish can i come too? i don't know how to fly fish but ill be staying in lake right down the road from you.......

Of course you can come ... strength in numbers! Those little trout don't have a prayer .... just one small issue. No one here seems to know what the heck they are doing. Maybe one of us should bring along a stick of dynamite in case the "fly fishing" doesn't get results.
