It is pretty common for folks to assemble a first aid kit for either the car or hiking, but have you also considered a "survival" kit? This would include the essentials for keeping yourself alive in the woods if you happen to get lost or injured. The main emphasis is on items to create a fire, and rudimentary shelter. Things like waterproof matches, rope or cord, large plastic bag or sheet, compass, signal mirror, pancho, knife, saw wire for cutting wood, and small amount of kindling. All of this can easily be included in a day sack, backpack, or fannie pack. Also, know where medical facilities are located in case you or someone with you gets seriously injured. The time it takes to figure this out after the fact could be critical (a GPS might be a good addition to your kit). It is not uncommon for hikers and hunters to be victims of hypothermia, sometimes with fatal results. Just be prepared if your plans include extended walks in remote woods.
