Living & Working in Great Places

what a rush. i tiptoed into forest not away from, but toward the big mamma bear and her two cubs after i saw them cross denny creek road. i could hear what sounded like limbs being ripped off a tree or a large tree just starting to creak, crack and fall. my favorite shot of the series is of one of the babies sliding down the tree about 50 feet from me

When a mother bear makes her cub or cubs go up a tree it is a defensive mood because she smelled you and wanted her cubs safe. If you were within 50 feet you are lucky to still have your skin. Not the most intelligent thing that you have done in your life but lucky for you it wasn't the last thing you did in your life besides trying to outrun a mother bear who sees you as a threat to her cub.

i actually didnt get out of dodge quickly...and really only the mosquitoes drove me away. initially mamma was pretty pissed, spinning around and snorting. after 3 kind of tense minutes she calmed down, hung out behind some trees and watched me watch her and her cubs from 70 feet away. i really wish some of the shots of her turned out, but only a few of her cubs were coolworks worthy. i feel so blessed to have had the experience, how many other folks get to see baby bears slide down trees.

Great shot, but I hope you got out of dodge quickly. : ) You know the song "A bear in tennis shoes?"
