Definitely Bill .... we'll get a game together some evening. Hopefully the wifi will be good enough so we can make plans once that everyone is settled in and know their schedules. I'll be reporting on May 25.

Wow, I forgot all about softball. My family has been busy following the former Auburn/Bama players in the NFL draft. I'm getting ready to head to the NR; it's only 11 days until I leave. Got to eat at All Steak the other night.

Yes, I'm still in Laurel, Mt., which is about 20 minutes southwest of Billings on I90. I've spent a lot of time here the past few years, staying with a friend from back east who retired to her home area. I've not been to Glacier, but everyone says it's awesome. There is an unbelievable amount of things to see and do out here! Since you're a teacher, I can't imagine you wouldn't want to visit the Little Big Horn Battlefield over at Crow Agency. If you haven't been there, it can't help but choke a person. And the Spirit Warriors Memorial is stunning. I still haven't been to Helena or Missoula. Somehow you and your wife should do a little exploring while out here - the wind farms in the Judith Basin, the Missouri Breaks, etc. This is trout country, if you fly-fish. The Park is catch and release, license required. As the summer rolls along, there will be opportunities for doing things outside the Park. I took my first white-water trip on the Yellowstone from Montana Rafting right in Gardner. The town is small, very touristy, with a couple of restaurants, a number of bars, and motels and gift shops and very walkable. You'll be able to hook up with employees with cars, who are always going somewhere - Livingston, Bozeman, Chico, or just driving around the Park. Watch for the bear jams! It's as much fun watching the Rangers do their work as it is watching the wildlife. Some of the Rangers put on quite a show, especially during the Elk rut in the Fall. I hope you get to experience this. I'm not sure when I'm leaving Laurel yet; it's only an 8 to 10 hr. bus trip to Denver from Billings, and I'm hoping to connect with my winter roommate's friend from Denver who is currently at South Rim, Grand Canyon, and also going to RMNP for the season. I don't need to report in until May 19, as the season doesn't really begin until Memorial Day weekend. Just south of YNP is the Grand Tetons, so try to get there too! Later!

Hi Bill! There is the old chapel right at Fort Yellowstone which has interdenominational services on Sunday mornings. It is a small lovely historic chapel. There is a Catholic Church in Gardiner as well, but I believe the Fort Chapel has a mass also, but may be on Sat. nights. Last summer the Yellowstone Association set aside a number of it's specialty excursions just for Xanterra employees, but be sure to sign up early. I took one myself. There was no cost. Employees may also sign up for the tours Xanterra offers, but it is on space-available. There is no cost to employees. The Rec. Association will post activities on the bulletin boards in the dorms and there is a blackboard in the employee dining room (EDR) which is always kept up to date. There will be organized hikes, perhaps a trip or two to Chico Hot Springs, a park-wide employee talent show, baseball team, etc. There are also activities conducted by the Park Service, and that into will be available at the Front Desk, and at the Albright Visitor Center. Everything at Mammoth is an easy walk - Post Office, Clinic, Chapel, and you'll be able to walk up the travertine terraces. The Corral is walkable and I think the horses will come in in June. Employees get a discount on trail rides. They are only hour-long (I went out a few times), which cost about 28. with discount. Employees get very creative about moving around the Park to other locations - hitchhiking worked well! Thank you for the kind words re. Estes Park - I'm excited but will miss so many people at Yellowstone this summer. Rec. Assoc. will also rent DVD's and a TV (no reception in the park). I brought my portable DVD player which was a lifesaver! Let me know if I missed anything you were interested in.

Since you are a "couple", you will most certainly be assigned to the Aspen dorm, located directly across from the NPS Allbright Visitor Center and Fort Yellowstone. Great view if you face out the front. You will have elk on the lawns all season (lots of new calves beginning May), and there are probably bison at Mammoth now. When the Rec Center is in full operation, you will have so much available to do. I couldn't take advantage of a lot of evening activities since I worked nights mostly. The Rec is an indoor facility with basketball court and workout equipment, right behind the hotel, and shared with the Accounting offices. Bozeman trips thru the Rec were once a month or so, for about $10. You will find employees with cars who will probably offer to take you in also. Since Reservations is more 9 to 5'ish, you will have plenty of evening activities. I believe you can link to the Rec Association's separate website through the Xanterra Yellowstonejobs. There is "Boiling River", a soak area near Mammoth, a bit of a hike. I didn't go. Just a note: our last snow last Spring was June 11!
