The milepost is the most amazing book in the world. I recommend getting it before you get to Canada. It will tell you all of what to expect mile by mile. you can buy it at places like Barnes and Nobles, and Borders. Extra precautions are good. I'v...

Ironically I will be leaving Alaska and going to Yellowstone, where I started seasonal work almost 11 years ago. Talk about coming full-circle... I came up here to settle down but I'm not quite ready yet. Seasonal works seems to be firmly implanted in my blood. I might have to find myself a wife who will force me to settle before it is possible :)~
I also thought of something else regarding showers; Some people make showers by getting a 5-gallon bucket then pouring heated water into it and using that as a shower. It actually works very well... If you get a chance, there is a town nearby (by boat) called Pelican. It is a really cool town and there is a festival called Pelican boardwalk... it is infamously fun. Also if you can boat to Sitka, I hear it is gorgeous. I have never been there but many have told me it is an incredible place, an old Russian town full of history. If you need any more info, I am here. peace :)

A conversion van will work great because you can "road trip" all 45 miles of road from North to South and find places you are comfortable crashing at (Juneau side). The same goes for Douglas... You should have no problems.
Auke Bay harbor has a pay-shower and is fairly nice (maybe Juneau also). So do the laundromats. I often took a formal shower 2x a week and did a "hippie shower" the rest of the time (hippie shower is finding a private bathroom and washing in it). Some consider that gross, but better to be clean than stinky...
You can also go to a sports store and buy a portable 5-gallon solar shower to use. Fill it with water, set it in the sun for a while, then you have warm water.

There is not much in the way of RV camps because Douglas/Juneau is not connected to the road system. However, when you go across the bridge to get to Douglas make a right and follow the road until ALMOST the end and there will be a camp site there. You can camp on the beach or simply park your RV and crash. There are signs that limit it to a week, but I never had a problem as I tended to change spots about once a week. There are also spots off the road prior to arrival at the camp site.
Echo cove is a bit of a drive but is a quiet and nice spot to camp. Go on Glacier Highway past Auke bay until the road ends and you will be at Echo cove. There are a number of spots on the way there that are very pretty also. Be aware of bears; I almost walked straight into one without knowing it one day. Could have ruined my day :)~
I believe Mendenhal Glacier has a camp site, but I have never been there so I don't know much about it.
I hope this helps some... peace :)

You would have been crazy to pass it up... :) Congrats on the job! I think you will love it You will not be far from my old fishing boss. You will also be near a beautiful bay where you can camp... I met a couple there one night and we were determined to make a fire regardless of the rain. They were fun and the gal worked as a zip-line guide where you will be :)... she loved her job. Make sure to check out Louie's (also known as PP's) on Douglas... It is one very interesting place. If you are patient, also try a pizza at Pizza Verona; She makes it fresh to order (so it takes time). Great pizza.... good luck

Hi Catie... I know Juneau decently. I worked there in 2006... Some places there have advertised in Craigslist Alaska. All of the below are from a server/bartender perspective except Allen Marine which may still be hiring. Allen has a good reputation...
Red Dog Saloon (days only!) and Alaska Hotel would be great for the summer $$$.
Thane Ore House is a salmon bake type of restaurant..don't know too much about profit potential there.
Zen seems busy and Westmark Hotel is the upper crust place. Very good $$$ from what I am told.
Docwater's is good money; I had a friend work there.
Island Pub across the bridge in Douglas is a great place, although I don't know much about the $$$ potential. If you can get on @ Louie's, in Douglas also, go for it. A dive bar but awesome... my favorite bar of all time. Great and friendly locals (Douglas beats Juneau hands down).
In downtown Juneau, the money is made by the cruise ships docking during the DAYTIME and at the good restaurants at night. That is key....
Hangar on the Wharf can get busy, but they are not honest people. Avoid Twisted Fish at all costs (same owner for both restaurants)... They have 1 decent computer to put orders in and the $$$ are lousy despite the fact that the restaurant looks beautiful. I often walked with only 14-35 because they use the seniority system. You have to tip out about 40% even if the person is not there.
There are several other places I should think of but can't seem to now... remind me again, o.k?
Auke Bay is a beautiful spot... Visit it if you can. There are Eagles everywhere. There is a zip-line tour company in Douglas that is fun... they could be a good spot to work also.
The fishing boat Butt Ugly (I worked on it) will sell you a whole Sockeye Salmon for 15.00... great deal for great fish.
Many places will put signs of help wanted when they need help; Keep an eye out.
I hope this helps... p.s. Where are you working?
