It has a number of huge supermarkets, and an incredible amount of restaurants.
It isn't close to other cities. But one teacher here goes to Urumxi every weekend, and that's a very large city. I've visited Kashgar, which is an overnight train-ride away, and that place is pretty interesting. There is also an airport in Korla, to connect you with points further off in a quicker manner than train.
Among the foreign teachers I've talked with in Korla, many are serioulsy studying Chinese. Others have studied tai chi, massage, and music (so those kind of options are available in the city). The longer I'm here, the more that unfolds.
Good luck in your decision and coming adventure!
