Its pretty sweet, I had alot of fun two years ago. Lot of partying, trips to vegas and lake powell. Oh yeah, and the work was that bad either!!

Nope but I visited it while working up at the North Rim last year. Was thinking of applying to either Bryce or Zion. Whats it like up there, as an employee? I liked there mode of transportation they have. Makes it so much nicer.

I'm gonna be heading back to Bryce Canyon for the spring/summer season and was wondering if anyone else is gonna be working there?

did you talk to Diana Sizemore in HR? What job are you applying for? Some are OK and a few are not. I don't know if I am returning to Crater Lake or not.
I just had a phone interview with Grand Teton Lodge Company. All locations have pluses and minuses. and this is the time of year when everyone is calling. Good luck.

Have you thought about Yosemite? I was just there for the first time last October and thought it was a wonderful park. It's another big rock, but at least you can drive away from it instead of boat or swim. ;)

Hi David,

I love Roche Harbor. We would cruise around the San Juans for 2-3 weeks each summer on my dad's boat.

What brought you out there/up there?

Kari :)

O.K., Here I am sitting in a biker coffee shop in San Pedro, Ca about to enlighten you about Crater lake.

First, you gotta have a car or motorcycle. You don't want to be stuck on the hill for a syummer releying on the company van.
They do have van trips but thay are not special, but only a lst resort.
there are 3 towns within 30 minutes of the park: Ft. Klamath, Chiloquin, and Prospect. Ft. Klamath is closest and has nothing but a general store and a couple of motels (not even a pub); Chiloquin is an Indian Town with a crummy casino and lots of broken windows; Prospect is a logging town and has lots of people with missing teeth and a pub, pizza parlour, and B&B's. Some people go there, but I nearly got by ass kicked there by a bunch of drunk locals who thought I was picking up on their 21 yr. old girl because I wished her happy birthday. Luckily I talked my way out of it by walking into their huddle and confronting them before any action started.

Further away are Klamath Falls (~1 hour) and Medford & Ashland (~1.5 hour).
Klamath Falls is a cowboy town but has an active night life primarily at Waldo's, the local meat market nightclub. Medford is larger but a more economically stable city; I know they have a great irish pub called 5 sisters but you'll have to seek others for the benefits of medford nightlife. Ashland has Shakespearean festivals and is a collge town. It's nice but a bit fairey-tale'ish for me. Good coffee shops and lots of college age people.

Crater Lake itself is beautiful although one of the smaller national parks.
There are two dorms and 3 camping areas for employees. All but one are in the park. There is a company owned campground 11 miloes east of the South entrance - it's nice there but with lots of mosquitoes early in the season.
the party dorm is The Rim Dorm, but is nicknamed the grim dorm because it is old and shabby. It is located wit hin walking distance of the Crater Lake Lodge. The other dorm is call Mazama (where the managers live) and is near the south entrance. I't a bit more subdued and where i have lived.

There are the usual trails and free boat rides offered. There are no restrictions on mingling with the guests or buying drinks at the lodge, as long as you don't barf on the floor of the "great room", at the lodge.

The company is OK. A lot of people 'dis Xanterra, but they were a lot better than Aramark at Lake Powell, who imposed restrictions on employees. Getting caught with illegal drugs of underage drinking will get you quickly fired and "escorted" to the park boundary. It seems that those who openly flaunt their defiance are the ones who get booted.

If you get a connection with the seasonal rangers, it's nice to go to one of their events. The first year there I got in with the crowd and went to some great parties. Being in boat operations we intetract with rangers all of the time, however, most postions with Xanterra at Crater Lake are not like that.

Of course, it's not all fun and games and enough bullshit exists, as it does everywhere. But there is opportunities for fun. Just be sure to have a car.

hope this helps.

hello David:

I finally figured out how this &&%%^&**^% social networking works within coolworks. I just arrived in Los Angels after a 2 day drive and am pooped out. I'll send you a note later about Crater lake, + & -. BTW, mauria has also worked there in the same department as me, in 2005 and part of 2007, I believe. If you e-mail her tell her that she should be ashamed of herself for not calling me; she goes to school about 20 inutes from where i live!

Later,
Capt. joe
