Well, although I'm working for the Park Service, I'll be living right across the highway from St. Mary Lodge. I had suspicions about the place after reading some negative travel reviews of the place. I've worked at Crater Lake for the last 5 summe...

Profile Information

Hometown:
Tualatin, Oregon
About Me:
I took an early retirement in March 2004 and have worked the last 5 summers operating tourboats at Crater Lake National Park with Xanterra. This summer (2009) I am exploring other NP locations to work, although I might just end up at Crater Lake National Park again.

I've travelled to New Zealand a few times; our daughter lives on the South Island and we are joint owners of a house in TAKAKA, NZ. Other places I visited have been western europe and S.E. Asia; either by myself or courtesey of the U.S. NAVY.

I also am in the Bridgetown Morris Men, an amateur performance group; a drinking group with a dancing problem! (www.bridgetownmorrismen.com)
We get together weekly for dance practice and end up singing ballads and bawdy songs in a pub.

I like meeting people from all over the world, either by visiting them or having them come to my summer workplace. I make a special effort to stay out of the summer employment "drama" , as much as possible, in order to maintain my sanity. The drama can make you forget how lucky you are to be working in such beautiful places as National Parks.

Joe, I believe I just found my dream job and you have it! Any advice on how I might land an opportunity to operate a tour boat? Are you in the Tetons this summer? BTW: love your stash!

Hey Joe - A friend of mine will be "Jammer" (red bus) driver for GFI at Glacier this summer. His name is Jon Hart and he is roughly your age. He is a good guy, he and I worked together in maintenance at Old Faithful in Yellowstone in 2007. My guess is that you might run into him and thought I would give you the heads up. Good luck on the new job.

Crater Lake is a gorgeous place but I think you will love GLacier. Visited Crater in 2003 but haven't been to Glacier since 1993.... fell in love with the place.

I have to be at park May 21 but will definitely be looking for your interpretive talk.....YOu are going to love Glacier...so much to explore! See you there.

I will be at East Glacier this summer and one of the things I love other than hiking is to go to as many ranger interpretive talks as I can get to. So I hope I get to hear you at one of yours.

Its a big change from Crater Lake. Lots more bears for one thing - Grizz especially near Many Glacier. That's the only caution I would give you. Will you be in the visitor center and/or roving interp? There are amazing hikes that are ranger led. One of my favorites is a short one, but it starts at the Many Glacier hotel (1/2 hour from St. Mary), takes a boat across Swiftcurrent Lake, hikes 1/4 mile from the landing to another boat waiting to take you across Josephine Lake, then a hike either to Grinnell Lake and beyond. Moose area. The east side of the park, where you will be is the "road less traveled" by the tourists but the most beautiful I think. Do not forget to spend time on the Canadian side of the park; the town of Waterton itself is amazing, something out of another century; and the boat ride to Goat Haunt, the hikes from there - wonderful. Two Medicine is also a great place. Closer to St. Mary is Virginia Falls (St. Mary Falls first). Where you are is on the edge of an indian reservation; just don't spend alot of time in Browning. Try out the Babb Steakhouse and Johnson's on the hill above the lake. You won't be disappointed. If you like to golf, a cute (small) course is at East Glacier Lodge (the most beautiful of the lodges in my estimation). You'll love it. Its my favorite park but I spent 4 years there and wanting to explore others. I'm going to Washington this year. Keep me posted - champ12127@aol.com Enjoy.

You're kidding me, Joe! Ok, I might work for Crater Lake next year, but this year I gave my word for Yellowstone. Thanks for the tip. I will glean the upmost from this season at Yellowstone, especially the new friendships and adventure. Yes, its the same company, Xanterra. Really glad to have this site to compare notes, make friends and network. :D

Hi Joe,
Fortunately I have been offered 2 jobs, and a pretty good possiblity on a 3rd. I have decided to work as cook at Lake Hotel in Yellowstone, cause the whole picture looks best to me, this being my first season actually traveling to a seasonal job. Wish me luck! Best wishes to you, too.
