Bookends

Today is the 16th anniversary of my mom’s death.  She was a mere 53 years old when she passed, but I distinctly remember her looking like she was 80.  I’ve always thought of her passing as her body just being done.  It had taken all it could and needed to be at rest.  And I [...]

Butterscotch

Today I was surprised by the arrival of a little orange kitty showing up at the door.  My husband innocently enough went to the vet’s office to buy some cat food and he came home with a kitten.  I guess you can call us foster parents for a day or so.  I doubt we’ll keep [...]

The Evergreen State Fair

…starts today.  I haven’t been in years, but I do remember going as a kid with my folks.  Back then, I loved to spend as much time as possible in the rabbit barn admiring all of the bunnies.  I’m guessing it would be the same if I went back today.  I also vaguely remember seeing [...]

Hometown:

About Me:
I am the Community Manager for Cool Works, which means I moderate this network and keep up our presence on the Interwebs. I also help employers post their jobs on our site and write our Seasonal Human Resources Blog. So, if you have questions about anything Cool Works, please ask!

I live and work in Seattle and very much love being from the Pacific Northwest. After college, I took IMHO the requisite trip abroad spending time in Europe and then New Zealand and Australia. Upon my return, broke and needing a job, I went to an open house for Driver/Guides with Gray Line. It sounded intriguing enough and I figured if I could drive my dad's old '68 Chevy Nomad, I could drive a 40ft. motorcoach. Well, this experience lead me to the cruise and tour world and I spent 11 years in the "seasonal" world on a FT basis doing safety, recruiting and human resources for both Holland America and Princess Cruises.

Now, I am working for the mother of all websites to find a seasonal job, Cool Works, and I couldn't be happier. Helping folks to find that experience that sets the stage for their growth and happiness in life is a fantastic feeling.

In my spare time (HA!), I also volunteer for the Puget Sound Blood Center, am on the board of directors for Washington Business Week, and I run a small pet and portrait photography business called Kari Quaas Photography. My life is filled with fun activities and I love to make new friends living the seasonal life.

Last Seasonal Job:
Being a Driver/Guide for Gray Line of Seattle.
Favorite Seasonal Job:
That's a tough one. I once worked concessions for the Everett Giants, now called the Everett Aquasox and that was a ton of fun. The people I worked with were energetic, fun and we got to share in the ups and downs of a minor league baseball team. Real grass! However, through my job as a Driver/Guide I saw lots of things that I never would have had the opportunity to do so if not for that experience. For example, I once drove the generals of the navy to every port and base around the Puget Sound including Bangor Sub Base. I got to carry national sports teams to and from the airport, dodging plane wings. What a trip! Quite literally.....
Where have you lived and worked?

Everett, WA - YMCA, Panagopolous Pizza, Catholic Community Services, Everett Giants

Pullman, WA - Regents Dining Hall, SALC (tutored students)

Seattle, WA - Gray Line of Seattle, Gray Line of Alaska, Princess Tours, and Cool Works

Jokingly, Anchorage, AK for Gray Line of Alaska where I drove one airport transfer and a cruise ship transfer from ANC to Seward. : )
Dream Job:
Make enough money from taking photographs to support my habit.

The famous red buses at Glacier National Park. What a hoot! I am in Yosemite now, but miss the beautiful buses, and scenery-being up on the Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Wow I never expected a comment on my profile! I believe I may have underestimated this network. Thanks for that and I enjoyed reading your profile as well...GET ME OUT TO SEATTLE PUH-LEASE! I spent a wonderful week there in October of 2009 and did not want to leave. Since I grew up in NC, I am possibly numb to the sight of dense forests and pines, but, riding the bus from the airport into downtown and gawking at the 'Christmas Trees' that lined the roads changed me. The ride back to the airport at the conclusion of the trip was disappointing as I was leaving my beloved Discovery Park, Gas Works Park, side trip to Hendrix grave, market every morning for java and fruit, and a 5 minute walk to dinner and fantastic music each night. Quirky fashion in the city was so fun and unexpected and severely misunderstood by friends and fam when I returned home. The wordsgloom and rain make their inevitable emergence when Seattle is the subject of conversation. I am happy that many people think it to be a depressing place...I selfishly agree with them and hope they never learn the truth. Your secret is safe with me...

I went to India and Thailand this past March. It was a great experience. I have an uncle who lives in India so he was our guide. The Taj Mahal is amazing! I don't have any friends on here yet, can I add you? =)

Thanks! This is an awesome networking/job website! This site is what helped me find the Southwest Conservation Corps, and I have been hired for the Fall 2010 as a crew member, starting at the end of this month. I'm excited and looking forward to this new adventure!

My husband got me into it. He lived out west for the longest time and he was always into tarantulas he just never had the opportunity to own them. When he was with me we started out with a rose hair and ended up with 30 different other ones. :) They are beautiful though. I won't always touch them all, some he won't let me but they are gorgeous spiders.

Thank you for the warm reception! I will have to look, I was hoping to get out of Michigan by the winter though. The big issue for me is finding somewhere I can work enough to manage housing... my current housing situation is probably not sustainable for much longer, and I was hoping to go somewhere a little more exciting in the near future.

I have just been working around home, there's not much going on in michigan and not a lot of opportunities... I have been looking for somewhere to go this winter, I joined this site to hopefully find some places I could look into out west, since it's unlikely I will be able to stay in michigan after this fall...
I am just trying to keep my eyes open, I suppose. There aren't a lot of jobs open in michigan, and a lot of competition for what is. I know the economy isn't doing too well anywhere, but I just have this feeling like staying in michigan isn't going to accomplish anything for me, or even teach me anything about myself. Of course, finding work in another state is no small task either...
sorry for the delayed response, I am pretty new to the site :)

I should have read your comment a little slower :-) The house in Colorado is a 2nd home for us that we plan on renting when we are not there. Since neither Irene or I know how to ski this means mainly during the winter months .... say October to April. May to September we hope to eventually use it ourselves (I'll have to stop working first).
