Cool Mid Life ltimate Adventure Advice Sought

I can't offer any worthwhile advice on the spiritual, self-actualizing, get-in-touch-with-your-inner-homeless-person vibe. I would actually concentrate first, if I were you, on the practical aspect...

Colorado hopefully?

The jobs will be easy to find (relatively), as vacancies tend to open up after the holidays. The best thing to do might be to just show up at the personnel office(s); who knows, somebody might have...

"Normal" jobs

The trouble overall is that potential employers nowadays have a mountain of applications to look through, even for what used to be "undesirable" jobs, so they can cherry-pick. Often, your applicati...

From what I understand, you don't camp in the regular public campgrounds, but rather, ones set aside for the volunteers and seasonal workers. So I would expect them to be quieter.

Do you know anyone who has worked in Yosemite, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, or Glacier? Those are the parks where I'm submitting applications. I can't imagine going to one of these places without a car, but I guess some people do. Is the "field day...

It seems from what you've said in previous posts, you want to be on the "interpretive" end of things--you would like to use your knowledge and education to help people learn about the parks. The SCA is more about pick-and-shovel work: trail mainte...

i know a lot of volunteers and there are benefits, like rides to and from trail heads (volunteers tend not to have cars), one day a week is a field day (which means you do an activity within the park), and you can count on your time off.

Lake Powell in the summer is hotter than the surface of Mercury. Like the rest of the Colorado River, it's down in a canyon--the lake only partially fills it. So in a very hot country, you're in the hottest part of it, usually without a breath of ...

I've been looking into NPS volunteer work in one of the major western National Parks. You generally get some kind of housing, a uniform, and often a small stipend--which means that your bottom line is about the same as working for a slave-driving ...

You have absolutely no--zip, zilch, nada, none--chance of being able to bring pets of any kind into employee housing. And why should you be able to? Why should the other employees be expected to put up with your dogs? If you want to find rental h...

Well, it sounds like the owner is ripping you off directly, so there's no one to complain to. You're probably talking about a substantial amount of money here, and I think it's worth the risk to confront the owner directly and demand that he retu...

It would probably help if you clarified whether you were heading to Taos from Washington D.C. or Washington state.....and if from Washington state, which part, since you would take a considerably different route to Taos from Seattle than, say, Spo...

If you dont like the conditions of working seasonal jobs by all means go find another way to make a living. I am sure you could take any business let say Mcdonalds for example. I am sure many people are disatisfied with work experience at Mcdonalds. Nobody is forcing them to work at Mcdonalds, they are free to go find a better job, go to college and get a better career. Oviously there are thousands of people that do enjoy this work and keep going back to the parks every year. If you think you can do better then go start your own company and get the contract to run the park jobs. Dont ruin it for the new people who are just looking for some encourgment to take a big step of fulfilling there dream. Working in the parks must not be your dream come true. So get over it and get a life please.
