Profile Information

Hometown:
Weston, OH
About Me:
I have come to the realization that the typical American dream of 2.5 kids a house with a white picket fence and the dog does not exist for me. Instead, I have accepted the fact that for the most part I am going to be alone and transient in this world. There is too much to see, too much to do and such little time on this Earth to possibly do it all. But, Hell there is no harm in trying is there! So, I am going to work my way around this world and enjoy my love of people, food, drink, writing and hope that I can find a niche that I can fit myself into and be happy.
Last Seasonal Job:
Rio Blanco Ranch, Mountain Sky Guest Ranch
Favorite Seasonal Job:
Coldfoot Camp
Where have you lived and worked?
Ohio, Alaska, Montana, Minnesota, Colorado
Dream Job:
To own and run a back country lodge or ranch

Day 2
Good Morning South Dakota! The greatest thing about camping is waking up with the sun. Well, at least I wake up with the sun. Angie still enjoys sleeping in as late as I allow her to. The KOA was a welcoming sight in the morning. The "K"ampground was teeming with National Park employees enjoying a preview day of the grounds and also taking advantage of pancakes, sausage biscuits w/gravy and bacon from the kitchen. We, however, only opted for coffee that morning. We bro… Continue

Work in New Zealand this winter!

This winter I will be attempting to do something that I am sure a lot of you here on CoolWorks have either thought about doing yourself; or have already done but wished you would have had some help.
Some people here thought it would be a great idea to share with you some of the information that I have gathered to try and make it easier for the rest of you. What a fantastic idea!

As my plan goes now I am planning to be there from Mid-Oct/ April. I do not have firm dates but this should not deter… Continue

National Park Cross Western Tour...Help Me!

I am starting out at Rio Blanco Ranch on June 1 +/- 2 days. So my girl friend and I, or rather me really decided that it was necessary to take a little bit of time to reach our destination. In an attempt to please me, distract me or simply just not have to do it herself she leaves me with the sole responsibility of planning the trip. Really? Does she have any idea what she is getting herself into? Quickly I pull out my National Park Passport book. There are a lot of stamps I need between here an… Continue

Hey Kevin,

Thanks for the WELCOME :D. That is great advise to look at surrounding ranches as well. Do you know where I can find information on ranches or other options for stuff around the Tetons. I am kinda new to this way of searching for jobs so any advice you have I am HERE TO LISTEN. Any recommendations for things to bring or ways to get connect as well...Where have you been exploring recently???

Thanks! What's your beef with Michigan, anyway? When I started this "journey" about a month ago I WAS looking at ranch jobs. I've actually applied and spoke to a ranch in CO and waiting to hear back from them. Now that I've had time to do research though I am finding myself oooooing and aaaaaing at every different position and place. I originally wanted to go to Alaska but think it is a better idea to get an idea of the seasonal positions around the "lower 48". Any thoughts? Also looking at Lake Powell for summer and still looking for possible winter jobs next year. Can't start anything until early March 2010 due to travel plans. After that I'm as free as the open road! Cheers.

Hey Kevin,

Thanks so much for your note. And I'm glad you got to see the ball of twine. He was building that when I was a kid. Pretty quirky. Who would have imagined it would become the identity of the town? I'm headed by there today to visit my brother.

To round out your experience enjoy the song at

http://www.lala.com/#search/biggest%20ball%20of%20twine%20in%20minnesota

If that link doesn't work go to www.lala.com and search for "biggest ball of twine in minnesota".

The town has two condo complexes that were built by the town and are run non-profit. The one further from the town has studios in the range of $600 and they were available year around on a six-month lease save for deep ski season for a month or two when they were full. One is called something like the Mountain Village Condos and the other is called something like Big Kate's or something. Every employee of the hotel where I worked moved out of the one, saying they didn't like it and I agreed. I would do the Big Kate's one but the easiest way to check is to google up the local paper, Telluride Daily Planet, and its housing classifieds. I believe you'll be pleasantly surprised, at least if you're hip to housing costs in Vail and Aspen.
