About Me:
Proud Graduate of Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas! I was "early retired" from a 34 year career as an IT Project Manager (all things happen for a reason). Grew up in Oregon and now want to return to the mountains and woods of my youth. Love hiking, cycling, kayaking and fresh air.
Last Seasonal Job:
Acadia National Park, Maine - Visitor Use Assistant, Park Ranger
Favorite Seasonal Job:
I definitely LOVE being a Park Ranger in a visitors center .... I really think this is my "niche" in life. It just doesn't feel like work :-)

Did you realize there is a surreal, magical place right under your nose?  Did you know that Coolworks provides you an opportunity to go there every Spring?  Of course I am talking about Acadia National Park and "Downeast" Maine.  Considering how many folks apply at Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon and other popular Parks in the West I am kind of amazed so few people attempt to go to Maine.  I have only been here a month and I just can't get over what a special place this truly is.  It is…

Maine Updates

Posted on April 24, 2016 at 7:43am 1 Comment

Just a minor update on my Maine adventure.  We leave Houston on Saturday, May 14.  First night will be in Memphis, Tennessee (BBQ & blues anyone?) ..... then on to Cleveland OH (I think).  We should arrive in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada on Monday, May 16 and be there until May 18.  Plan to visit some of the local vineyards (heard they had a ton of them there).  Heading to Bar Harbor next, plan to arrive on Friday, May 20.  I will be in the McFarland Hill Apartments (#4) with two room…

Off to Maine I Go

Posted on March 1, 2016 at 7:03am 4 Comments

All my scheming has paid off :) I have been hired as a VUA Ranger at Acadia National Park, and my Maine adventure begins on May 22.  I will be there right through the peak foliage in mid-October with my last day being November 5.  Honestly, I'm excited.  This is one of the few things left on my original bucket list and Maine is definitely a place I have wanted to experience for a long time.  One small regret is I can't seem to connect with anyone else who is traveling up there this Spring.…

Mesa Verde - Year 4

Posted on September 14, 2015 at 6:46pm 1 Comment

Well my fourth year at Mesa Verde is just about in the books so to speak.  There is just something about this area of the USA that keeps calling me back.  My summer was largely outside the Park exploring various places .... some for the first time and other favorites for a repeat visit.  The big difference was I was able to find a friend to share these experiences with .... that was HUGE.  It is so much better than doing everything alone.  But in four years this was the only year I could…

For the last 6 seasons I was House Mother to 35 college age kids in a 125 yr old structure that also housed bats and Ghosts :) I had my own living space, but was on call 24/7 and worked 40 hrs per wk. But, being able to live and work on an island was worth lack of a good nights sleep.

Thank you so much Richard for your advise.  I will be checking out Yellowstone for sure.  I know that the pay isn't much at most of these places and housing can get pricey if you take into account what you are being paid.  So I have some time to do some much needed research.  Thank you again, Ellen

Hi there, thank you for contacting me :)  I am interested in doing seasonal work, never have before, and I'm a "senior citizen".  I live in California and where do you think a good place for a "young" old lady would be?  I just don't know because the pictures that I see on Coolworks all look like young people and so I'm not sure if this is for me even tho I've read that Older and Bolder go to all these places.  Anyway any help or advice you can give me would really help.  Thank you, Ellen

Hey there! Just realized my last reply may not have gotten back to you. I apologize.I dont get on the net much cause of my poor signal. Anyway....
Thanks for all the great info! Can't wait to put it to good use.
We just spoke to Violet last night and we will be arriving on April 1st. Do orientation on the 2nd then Warren will have interpretive training on the 3rd. I'll be checking out the area.
I have a question. We are very poor bike riders. Are there flat areas where we would be able to ride? Don't want to haul them if not. I know you are an avid rider so let me know what you think. Thanks!
Look forward to seeing you again (and working with you so to speak)!

That would be great! We are so excited and already making plans. I also have a niece that's a ranger at RMNP and a couple of cousins in Denver. I used to live in Manitou Springs and we want to go to the dwellings there. Will be a busy summer!
