Hi Ron, Thats great. When do you plan to get here, and what department will you be in?
Its just one location, unlike Yellowstone, so we'll probably be seeing each other. I am cooking for EDR at present.

Hi Ron,

Welcome from a fellow Nevadan, but in the North.
I spent time in Las Vegas as I work for NDOT.

So you are retiring 7 months before we are you lucky dog. We sometime wish we had made this decision sooner, like when we moved from Las Vegas to Carson City. Have you found a position to go to when you retire? Good luck.

I am also grew up in the Chicago area.
You are certainly looking in the right place for a position in a National Park. If you have the funds to retire, and many have found that because of the market and declining home values as well as the huge costs of health insurance even after you are eligible for Medicare, that they don't; I'd certainly try and hook up ASAP.

If you find you need more $$ for a little while there are a number of possibilities. Working on a project basis for your current firm or similar employer. Becoming a Census taker if you have a car and can pass a simple reading and writing test Call 1-866-861-2010 or go to

I urge you to COBRA your health insurance for the 18th months you are allowed and then you will have a fairly substantial expense until you are able to get on Medicare.

Happy to supply you with additional suggestions if you need them.

Hi Ron,
I'm curious to know if you ended up deciding to take your retirement and work seasonally. Also, did you find a decent health insurance plan? If so, I'd like to pass on the info.

Thank you for your comment Ron. My husband and I love the 4 surrounding parks you mentioned. This is why I am considering working at one of them in the future. I am not yet retired but hope to be brave enough to take the plunge next year.

Thank you for your response.
