As for Portland there's not really much in the way of one-of-a-kind wilderness jobs that will bring you ample outdoor opportunities unless you work for a retail outfitter in town and then maybe? But my best suggestion to you is try out towns like Zig Zag, Welches, Sandy, etc...? Other than working at 'Hood' itself they will be your best bets if you truly want to stay out of the city.
If city life is what you prefer than I suggest Deek & Bryan's, US Outdoor Store, The Mountain Shop...Small places like that will have good jobs and also good hook-ups for future adventures.
