Try Chisos Mountains - it is far from the closest town (like 70 miles), but they do have housing and some wonderful views, warmer weather and you are right across the border from Mexico but 90 miles from a entry point. Have fun!

That is a very special place and one I spent many off hours just being. Enjoy your time there even if you are 32 years old, because one day, you will be old, very old and memories are needed to keep you alive at that time.

Yep, there are Chiggers and Ticks in Yellowstone. However, you just have to make sure your pants are tucked into the top of your boots and away you go... be sure to spray your legs with a good pesticide and you should be okay though. As to what a...

Christmas Eve in Grand Tetons National Park

Merry Christmas y'all.

A winter storm is blowing in from the northwest right now and we are expecting new snow before the morn. For the skiers and snowboarders that means new adventure for tomorrow - for me it means a warm fire, Critter, Cleo, Mowgli and Gizmo settling down for that warm winter's nap. somewhere in the vicinity of my feet.

This will be my last Christmas here but I am looking forward to warmer winds and a beautiful spring in the Texas Hill County - even mosquitos. I don't know i… Continue

Happy Thanksgiving!

Well we are drawing close to another Thanksgiving - outside, there is snow on the The Grand and Mt. Moran... inside my apartment, turkey, stuffing and pie making supplies lay on the counter waiting for me to start making my last Thanksgiving meal in the Tetons. You see, the year round accounting functions for all accounting personnel is being moved to Vail. This simply means that come the last of January 2009, I won't be working here any more. Makes me wonder where I'll be next year.

The past f… Continue

Another Winter on it's way

The seasonal employees have left and I am having serious abandoment issues again.... I suppose it is the herd mentality popping up.. you know, the one where everyone is getting ready to go somewhere but you? hmmm.... Accounting is being centralized here and that means that I will soon enter a new world.. where? who knows. I've applied for jobs all over the country, but with the economy being what it is, I think the employers are hiring someone that lives within the area, instead of searching out… Continue

Snow, Whistlepigs and Spring Again!

As I was driving down Highway 89 the other day to Jackson, I saw an amazing sight. Something that I've not seen since August 2007... it was a golden belly marmot, commonly known as a Whistlepig. Now for those of you who have never seen a whistlepig or a gold belly marmot - this varmit looks like a cross between a prairie dog and a Texas Whampus Cat. Of course, the poor thing was starving as it was sitting on about three feet of snow and not a green blade of anything in site. I'm thinking it got… Continue

Signs of Spring in on its way

Signs of spring are here again in the Teton National Park. The birds never really left during the cold long winter... but now you begin to hear their sounds. Rustling in the trees and a few quick notes. Yesterday, I saw one of the squirrels, first time in about four months.

The snow is begining to melt with the balmy temps of 34 degrees. I use to wonder why those from this area would go to Texas in December and wander around in flipflops and t-shirts... now I know. Texas winters are consider Te… Continue

HeyAnn
Where in the world are you now, and what are you up to? Haven't seen you around here for awhile.

Hi, Ann:

I noticed that you've work many seasons at GTLC. I was curious how many hours people were required to work each week. I understand that it's minimum of 40, but was just curious if they gave two consecutive days off each week? Any help you might give would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Keith

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner Ann - didn't get your message until today. Where were you in Glacier - you're photo does look so familiar. East or Lake McDonald? I was at the west entrance station most of the summer; worked for a small operation before that until I got hired by the NPS. If you worked at McDonald you had to come through my gate at some point. Been doing that every since although had to stay home in Florida in 2007. Someday I'll go back to Glacier but have other places I want to explore. Having said that may be going back to yellowstone (5th time) this year, since a new job for me may be available that I can't turn down. Time will tell!! Have a great new year. Where are you going from Tetons? Didn't you say you were leaving? Tina

Dear Ann - I just located your blogs and they are interesting. Sorry to hear Vail is moving their accounting to headquarters. I worked in the Tetons in 1996 as Front Desk Manager, when it was not yet owned by Vail. Enjoyed it there, but housing was an issue. Since then I was in Glacier in 2000 (Fr. Desk Mgr for GPI), 2005 also (west entrance gate for NPS) and Yellowstone 1999,2002,2003 - Location Mgr. Love all of the area and the opportunities it gives me. Hope you find another "gig" that suits you. I am sure it is beautiful in the park this time of year, but Florida suits me more in the winter. Your picture is familiar. We probably crossed paths at some point.

Thank you Ann. I will do that one summer. I met a couple up at Mt. Rushmore that has a shuttle bus that they run in Jackson Hole and they wanted me to come work for them one season. One day I will get over there. But for now I head out today for Bouse, AZ for the winter. I will try and find some small job that will pay for my running around gas. It will be a new area for me and so there will be lots to poke my nose into.
Have a good day.

CJ,
Yes, I do live here year round - but if you are interested in a full time job, there is one coming up as an Accounts Payable Supervisor (opposite of what I do), but enjoyable too. You would have to be able to work in a community type office and tune out everyone that comes through.

If you are only interested in a seasonal job and have vault experience, we are looking for someone to fill that position for the summer too... So JUMP! Don't let life pass you by.
The winters here are cold, snowy but bearable as long as you remember to get yourself up off the couch and go outside.... I think of the movie "Outside" everytime I say that... I'm learning to cross country ski and that has helped.. tried snoeshoeing last year and wound up in a snowbank with my bottom above the snow and my head down... lol.

As to questions, ask away - that is the only way you will get the answers that you need and want to know. I'm txann2007@aol.com off of here.

I did work at Glacier as the location accountant and there, I did alot of accounts payables and payroll reporting of hours to Beth as well as handling cash for all of the locations at East Glacier. It was a great first seasonal job and someday in the future, I hope to return and work at Lake McDonald but only if I have my own trailer/rig. Housing is just too tight there for me otherwise.
